Milne Breaks
Two Mile Mark
New Time Fastest
Ever Run in South
By Morty Schaap
Back in 1928 one John Henderson
of the University of North Caro
lina set a record in the two mile that
remained on the hooks for a long
time. In fact, until last Saturday
when at the Penn Relays Jack Milne,
sophomore here, cracked the old
mark by almost 18 seconds.
Henderson's time for the two mile
was 9:38, while Milne fiinished sec
ond to Curt Stone of Penn State in
9:20.5. Stone was clocked in 9:19.4.
It is believed that Milne's mark
was the fastest time turned in by a
collegiate in the history of southern
track. It bettered the conference mark
by Tommy Fields of 9:36 and also the
indoor mark of Lumpkin of Richmond
set in 1937.
On Saturday at the Relays before
43,000 screaming fans, the Carolina
480-yard shuttle hurdle team finished
in a dead heat with Virginia in the
trials and then went on to the finals
where Indiana nipped them by an
inch at the tape. The race was close
all the way with never more than a
foot separating the runners.
, Dick Taylor turned in the two fin
est legs on the relay team, and much
can be expected from this quartet in
time to come.
Chunk Simmons took a close third
in the individual 120-Invitation high
hurdles and also anchored the blue
and white relay team.
Jack Moody took a sixth place in
the high jump with a leap that tied
his University mark of 6 feet 3 inches.
Five men tied for first with leaps of
6 feet 4 inches.
Bob Seligman completed the Tar
Heel entrants with a fourth in the dis
cus, only five inches out of third and a
foot out of second.
Basketball Clinic
To Be Ended Tonight
The final Carolina basketball clinic
will be held tonight at 7:30 and brief
spring drills for about 20 Tar Heel
1947-48 cage candidates will begin
Monday afternoon, Coach Tom Scott
of the White Phantoms announced last
night.
Contest Halted By Darkness
At End Of 10 Wild Innings
Beason's Blow Knots Count For Carolina
In Eighth; Game May Be Replayed Later
By Irwin Smallwood
They settled exactly nothing in Emerson stadium yesterday
afternoon, nothing- that is in the Big Four baseball race, for the
Tar Heels of Carolina and the Deamon Deacons of Wake Forest
fought it out nip and tuck for 10 wild innings before their Sou
thern conference contest was called because of darkness with the
scoreboard indicating a 9-9 deadlock.
There was no decision made as to
! Tournament Deadline

tennis and horseshoe tournaments

Assistant Mural Director P. A. Lee
announced last night.
whether the game would be replayed
or not, but Carolina Coach Walter
Rabb indicated that the encounter
would be played at a later date if
it became evident that it would have
any effect on the final Big Four stand
mgs.
The tie ball game left Carolina with
a 2-1 record in Big Four competition
and Wake Forest with a 1-4 mark.
THe Tar Heels are idle the rest of this
week until Saturday when the Duke
Blue Devils make their second in
vasion of Chapel Hill of the season.
The Carolina-Duke series is knotted
at 1-all.
Lefty Vinnie DiLorenzo and Monk
Whiteheart shared the pitching duty
for the Carolina nine, and White
heart's steady hurling in the last two
frames saved the day for the Tar
Heels after Centerfielder Harry Bea
son had sent the, tying runs in with
a Texas league double to left in the
bottom of the eighth.
At the end of four innings of play,
Carolina rested comfortably with a
4-0 lead, but the Deacons exploded
for two tallies in the fifth, three in
the sixth and three in the seventh to
go into the lead, 8-7 at that point.
The Tar Heels had scored three times
themselves in the sixth to match the
torrid scoring pace set by the slug
ging Baptists.
Wake Forest put together a single,
a double and an error to make their
margin 9-7 as the Tar Heels came to
bat in the eighth, but Beason's time
ly two-base blow with Bo Hackney and
John Gregory on base evened the
score. Both teams went three up and
three down in the ninth and 10th
cantos.
Jack Hussey led the Tar Heels in
runs batted in, his triple with two on
in the third accounting for two pf
them. Jim Hamilton also registered
a triple for Carolina with one on
in the second.
Five bobbles afield on the part of
each team added to the looseness of
the ball game, and Coach Rabb of the
Tar Heels used a total of 16 men in
the fray.
Rain held up operations for 12
minutes in the sixth frame.
