Phillips. Twelve courses will be offered, each carrying graduate credit, Dean Phillips explained. Persons teaching will be permitted to carry stx quarter hour?, he said. Milton's Clolhing Cupboard Braucr Receives Science Award From Oak Ridge One member of the faculty and one graduate of the University of North Carolina are two of the three recipients of the first annual Science Research Awards of $500 each just announced by the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies for significant contributions to science, in the South. The faculty . member is Dr. Alfred Brauer, professor of math ematics at the University, and the alumnus is Dr. Walter Gordy, now associate professor of phys ics in ' Duke University. Recipient of the other of the three awards is Dr. Allen T. Hap pies" roared themselves right in to next Tuesday's session of Re corder's Court here by allegedly racing abreast up West Franklin Street at an estimated speed of 60 miles per hour. The students, both seniors, are William J. Gliarmis, 21, of Dur ham, and Lee S. Sunas, 23, pf Wilson. Officer David Roberts, who made the arrests Saturday night, said neither of the boys appeared to have been drinking. Gliarmis and Sunas were book ed on reckless driving charges? Roberts said. They will appear before Judge John Manning in Recorder's Court Tuesday morn ing. - ine students were driving a 1949 Oldsmobile and a 1947 Buick, and were allegedly driving at the excessive rate of speed from the west end of Franklin Street into town. Roberts said they were finally stopped in front of the elementary school. ARCHIBALD YOW, junior in the English Department, has re ceived notice that the National Anthology of Magazine Verse has accepted a poem of his, "Our Split World," for fall publication. The poem is a humerous one which was first published in The Daily Tar Heel last year. Committee, from ,a large number of applications last spring, returned to Chapel Hill several days before the new stu dents arrived in order to attend a series of informative meetings which were tos equip .them ; to supervise their groups. j During the' past week the counsellors have given lectures and conducted discussions on the campus and honor codes, student government and the constitution, drinking and dating, extra-cur ricular groups and the opportun ities they offer, UNC relation ships with other student bodies, the Student Council, the Nation al Students' Association, fratern ities, and the Dormitory Adviser System. In addition to these group meet ings another program has been carried out that was designed to facilitate a better understanding of University life, nurture 'a devotion, to the rights 6f students here, and develop an apprecia tion for the responsibilities which the existence of, these rights im pose. . This part of the program in cluded tours of the library, the book exchange, and the Plane tarium. All groups were aided in registration and some counsellors- conducted informal tours of the general campus.' - : The new students were offici ally welcomed to the University last Saturday evening at a general assembly in Memorial Hall. Archi bald Henderson, Chancellor R. B. House, and Acting President W, D. Carmichael were the featured speakers on the porgram. A second assembly of all new students was held Sunday night in Memorial Hall of r the purpose of acquainting , them with the functions of student government. Student Body President Bill Mackie, Al Lowenstein, and Sally Osborne went into detail on the general purposes of the various branches of the government and then explained their relation ship to the constitution. Orientation week will officially come to an end when classes be gin today but the counsellors have been requested to keep in contact with the members of their groups and be available to assist them throughout their first few months at the University. A meeting of all counsellors and other interested persons for the purpose of discussing this year's orientation program h been called for 4 o'clock next Wednesday afternoon, in Gerrard Hall. The purpose of this meeting is to determine the effectiveness of the program and to suggest possible changes that will benefit the next orientation week.
