Under construction for six months, the two-story office-store buiMms is getting the finishing touches put on by carpenters and painters. The ground floor is already oc cupied by the Sport Shop, West ern Union, and Gooch's Cafe, and office space on the top floor has been rented according to , Carl Smith, owner of the building. Mr. Smith said the Chapel Hill head quarters of the National Founda tion for Infantile Paralysis would occupy one of the upstairs oflices. The roof is of baked clay shingles made to resemble wooden shingles. Mr. Smith explained there would be no signs hanging from the building, but occupants would have their business listed on the front in new-type aluminum let tering that would not tarnish and has greater visibility. The Sport Shop and the entire upstairs has an automatic sprink ler system with heat derived from an oil furnace. A Carrier air con ditioning unit has been installed for second floor use also. One of the unusual features of the new building is the large: porch that extends two-thirds of the way across the upper story. Fronted by wrought iron grill work, the porch gives the build ing an added colonial style look. The upstairs will be finished in pastel colors. Arcnie n. uavis, uurnam ar chitect, will establish a Chapel Hill branch of his office in the new building. The Wrenn-Wilson Construction Company, also of Durham, is contractor for the work. The lot is 73 feet in width and extends to 78 feet in depth. There will be flower boxes un- aer me xwo Dig nay-type wm- rdows in the front of the building, which will have the outside woodwork painted in a light cream color. .trom chemical engineering to Smith-Prevost cleaning is the success story of Smith. "I am a Guilford County pro duct, born in Greensboro," he will tell friends, "raised and edu cated in High Point." Smith attended public school I in High Point and received his B.S. in chemical engineering from High Point College in 1933. He came to Chapel Hill in 1937 and opened the cleaning estab lishment now known as Smith Prevost across Columbia Street from its present location. "I worked in Spencer with the YMCA from 1933 to 1937," Smith said. PhD's were a dime a dozen in those days, and jobs in chemical engineering line were not so plentiful; I took what I could get." During the past war years, from 1943 through 1946, he serv ed as an instructor in mathe" matics with the University, re the i ceiving his M.A. in mathematics here in 1944. Smith is a member of the Methodist Church, past president of the Rotary Club, and is active with the local school board, the Merchants Association of Chapel- Hill and the Hope Valley club.
