whose father was a wealthy
landowner, shipping and trading
magnate. Elizabeth said "No."
Young Washington tried again.
The answer sill was "no."
Albert E. Van Dusen of the
University of Connecticut and a
student of Washington's era, said
today that the later-to-be father
of his country was quick to take ?
a hint.
"His diary never mentioned her
again," he said.
According to Van Dusen, young
Washington "had a normal inter
est in the young women of col
onial Virginia," but the attraction
was one-sided until, at the age of
27, he married Martha Dandridge
Curtis.
lie wooed a number of young
ladies, even wiota them poems.
Unlucky in his early loves, he
turned to surveying, farming and
then to the military.

Rather han a "multitude of
simultaneous building programs,"
Gray told the group that the three
branches of the University should
have a long range plan for per
manent improvements, set up in
line with their importance.
"Although many are needed,"
no new construction projects will
be requested now, Gray informed
the solons.
The reason for the present
shortages of funds, created with
in the past six months, is enroll
nient drops due to the Korean
and world situation. Gray esti
mated that the student body' at
Chapel would be cut by 25 per
cent next fall.
University . Controller .- W. D.
Carmichael took the floor to plead
the case for the proposed budget.
At present, Medical School stu
dents are carrying 12 oer cent of
the expense load of the school.
If tuition is increased they will j
have to carry 20 per cent. Car- !
michael gave this as an example I

and asked the legislators to give j
the amount necessary Ao avoid
ruch raise if possible.
However, lh;s request,
voiced by Gray, was not an of- : , j
iicial part or tlv3 appropriation
demands.
Aided by a series of charts, Car
michael explained to the solons
the situation the University is in
due to the present shortages.
Gray took the floor again at
the cession's end to make a final
plea. lie said his only fear was
that the University was "asking
for too little rather than . too
much."
He asked for enough funds not
to "impair our progress."
"As the University goes, so
goes North Carolina," he finished.
