Carolina Holds Lead
Until Final Minutes
By Vardy Buckalew
Puke's Blue Devils retained their
Atlantic Coast Conference lead last
d-h: in Woollen Gym by staging
a fourth quarter rally to overcome
Carolina's upset-minded Tar Heels,
67-ro. in a game that had the near
caracity croud on edge from start
tfir.ish.
Superior reserve strength on the j
Blue Devil bench was the actual
difference in the game, as two of j
Car "--".a's key players fouled out;
in the latter stages of the game. j
Carolina center Paul Likins had
been playing one of his best games
c: the season and was keeping
Carolina in the game with his re
touniing when he fouled out af
ter 8.19 of the third quarter.
Carolina forward Jerry Vayda
was the leading scorer of the game
as he poured in 21 points in the los
ing cause. Joe Belmont, Duke's
brilliant guard, was high man for
Duke and runner-up to Vayda fox
scoring honors with 20 points. Al
Liison scored 16 for Carolina. j
The Tar Heels went into the '
fourth quarter with a three point j
but after 4:45 of the final
Dmk Rally

Co
period Belmont "put the Devils
ahead to stay with a one-handed
push shot that gave Duke a 56-54
lead.
rue Tar Heels were held to
three field goals in the fourth
quarter while being overtaken; but
the strange thing was that Duke
was able to score only field goals,
thirteen foul shots, eight of them
by Ronnie Mayer, making the final
difference.
A Carolina drive in the second
quarter, paced by the sensational
driving layups of Skipp? Winstead,
saw the Tar Heels come from six
points behind to end the first half
with the score tied at 33-33. Dux--r.
their second quarter spurt, the ;
Tar Heels hit eight of ten field-
goal attempts for an 80 shooting
average. Carolina had a 36 aver
age for the game.

Lead Revenge Victory
By Dick Barkley
The North Carolina freshmen,
upset over their three previous
losses to the JDuke yearlings this
year, turned the tables on the
visitors in Woollen Gym last night
as they racked .up a 75-70 victory.
A last minute spurt by the Blue
Imps made the final count ' read
closer than the game really, was.
The contest started slowly as
each team missed shot after shot.
The initial period ended 12-12, and
neither team had held more than
a three-point lead.
The action picked up in the
second quarter and with Bob
Young doing most of the scoring,
the Tar Babies took a 19-15 mar
gin. Then Lenny Rosenbluth, who
had only one point during the first
quarter, helped Carolina build up
a 33-27 halftime advantage as he
dunked 12 quick markers.
"TheJTar Babies stretched their
lead to 43-34 with six minutes to
play in the third period, and
swapped baskets for the remainder
of that quarter.
The ten-point spread stayed in
tact throughout the first seven
minutes of the final stanza until
the Blue Imps put on a fine rally,
but the advantage was just too
much for them to attempt to over-
i come.
Joe Quigg led the Tar Babies with
25 points and Rosenbluth followed
with 24. Rappaport and Lakata
led the losers with 17 and 16
points, respectively.
Carolina, who plays the Wake
Forest frosh at Wake Forest Mon
day night, hit on 29 of 55 attempts
for a phenomenal 53 average.

Blaik Speaks
On'Mediocrit
WEST POINT, N. Y., Feb. 20
- (JP) . Is intercollegiate football
being menaced by the "theory of
mediocrity?"
Earl (Red) Blaik, the Army
coach, thinks it it. And he's ready
to put up a terrific scrap to turn
away that danger.
Blaik has an earnest belief in
the value and importance of foot
balL And he has very few, if any,
kind words for its detractors the
"educators" and physical educa
tion teachers who want to de-emphasize
or do away with inter
collegiate sports.
WTiat's more he feels there's
some sort of organized effort to
run down varsity sports and he's
deeplydisturbed by the public's
apparent acceptance of the idea
that big-time college football has
become a "racket"'
"Why, they've made it so you
feel there's something shameful
about having a good team," Red
exploded.'
The high school record breakers
follow:
100-yard breaststroke Tommy
Paymale (Granby); 200-yard free
style Tommy Shiffman (Greens
boro); 100-yard back stroke Bob
Black (Athens, Ga.); 150-yard in
dividual medley Jim Coventry
(Bearden of Knoxville); 150-yard
medley relay Granby.
New prep school records were
established by Lee Lawrence of
Staunton, 200-yard freestyle; Jeff
Zurcker of Staunton, 150-yard in
dividual medley; ,and the Staunton
200-yard relay team.
Thirteen schools- in all competed
in the event sponsored by the University.

Grim little Johnny Palmer
of Charlotte, N. C cut a seven-under-par

PGA record for 54 holes at 191
today and take a long lead in the
$12,500 Texas Open despite a record-tying
60 turned in by Ted
Kroll of New Hartford, N. Y.
The chunky veteran of the tour
holds a five-stroke lead as the
field of 90 turns toward the final
18 holes of this storied tourna
ment. Kroll's 60 was registered in early
afternoon and it looked for a time
as if Palmer might break that. He
did the first nine in 30 strokes but
ran into trouble on the second nine
and had 34.
It was the greatest day for rec
