Doak, who has been president of the UNC chap ter during 1956-57, presided at the banquet in Lenoir Hall and gave his presidential address at a pro gram following in Venable Hall. In his address Dr. Doak dis cussed research progress within the Venereal Disease Experimen tal Laboratory in Chapel Hill, of which he is "assistant director. Dr: - Doak - explained that since, 1943, -"when penicillin replaced ar senic drugs in the treatment of syphilis, scientists have been de veloping drugs which are com pounds .of phosphorus and testing ( them against organisms which cause" syphilis and ether dissascs. "Many of these drugs show promising therapeutic properties." Dr. Doak reported, "but at this fime we cannot say that they will be of any value." Dr. Doak explained that the re ;2arch with organophosphorus '-ompounds has a double object: (1) finding the life cycle of the vrganism Which cause syphilis by inding , which drugs are effective destroying it; and (2) finding irugs other than penicillin which might be 'non-toxic and mitiht be ised in cases where penicillin can iot be used.' such as patients with j sehsiti'vitytb penicillin. Dr. Doak, who joined the UNC faculty in lf!i8, is a native of : Canada and took , his doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry at the! University of Wisconsin. For 10. years before he came to Chapel !
