THE SUMMER SCHOOL WEEKLY Friday. August 16, 1SS7 Page 2 No Gobbiedigook During Summer Generally speaking, summer student govern ment at UNC has been about the only thing on the summertime campus that has not been "too hot." Somehow or other, when spring comes to Chapel Hill and the flowers begin to bloom and the trees to , send out new shoots, campus govern ment seems to dry up and blow away. Spring for Mother Nature has usually meant fall for student government. This summer, however, has been an exception. Student government has not only bloomed under the blistering summer sun, but has actually borne fruit. The latest evidence of student government vitality is the action taken to help solve the stu dent automobile problem. Not only has the student administration suc ceeded in securing an administration promise of much-needed parking space for student auto mobiles, but just this week it paved the way for a sizeable reduction in the automobile registration fee. Those familiar with South Building "gobbiedi gook" cannot fail to appreciate what an accom plishment this was. While we are on the subject, we should not fail to comment on the contribution 'to the solution of these problems made by Sam Magill and his assistants. Throughout the summer we have noticed a spirit of willingness and cooperation in the office of the Director of Student Affairs. As the summer draws to a close and our last issue goes to press, we should like to take this opportunity to congratulate both student and faculty administrations for their earnest and largely successful endeavors in groping with campus problems. As they occasionally say in the service: "Well done!" A Medal Goes To Woollen Gym If medals were being away, undoubtedly one should go to Woollen Gym for "Most Assinine Re quirements." And anyone doubting that this is well deserved is invited to go down and take a swim in our lovely outdoor pool. Not content with the usual aid and assistance given at pools, our Athletic Department has gen erously provided all male students with those items which defy definition but which they have, despite Webster and others, proceeded to call swim suits. And along with it they have a generous num ber of sizes extra large and extra smalL - The happy result is that the Carolina gentle man's afternoon at the pool is either spent trying to get into one of those garbs or in carefully yanking upward every 30 seconds in the effort to keep from being the founder of the Carolina nudist club. And the exception to the rule is "There are no exceptions to the rule" even for a swim party planned by the Summer School Activities Coun cils. ' In short, in case the Athletic Department has n't yet concluded what we are talking about, we think the policy concerning the use of the Uni versity pools is simply stupid. We can see no reason for the requirement for all male students to wear the swim suits issued by the gym. If B & K should ever visit the UNC campus, we should insist upon their relaxing with a swim in the pool. Then the Cold War would cease. For they would be convinced that America has at last gone collectivism Tll8 Summer Sc6mt KJec&ttf The official student publication of the UNC Summer School. Editor Of Campus Humor Magazine SUMMER SPOTLIGHT UNC-A Road To Maturity For Humor Magazine Editor Bill Michael says he came to Carolina to get four years older. This statement, however, is not as simple as it sounds. For get ting four years older, in Bill's opinion, encompasses far more than the accumulation of a few grey hairs and wrinkles. Bill ex plains it this way: "Being here at University of North Carolina has given me an insight into the ability to allocate abilities. Life on the Carolina campus and in the broader Uni versity community gives a stu dent the opportunity to develop a broad field of interests interests which the community does not attempt to differentiate between. "Therefore the student is given the opportunity to choose his own field of endeavor in his own way and without interference. "Futhermore," Bill continues, "the scope of one's associations here is broad enough so that one can choose by random contact the interests that will endure throughout his life; whereas they are not so broad as to be un fathomable. "I think the best thing that has happened to me since coming to Carolina is that I got four years older. It is a very good place to get four years older." This doesn't sound much like the editor of a humor magazine speaking; yet that's what Bill Michael is. Beginning this fall, he will be editor of Carolina's newest publication, the Ram-Ewe a magazine devoted to "expos ing the little people who really run the campus." This, however, is not Bill's sole literary endeavor. He likewise has served on the Publication Board and for a time wrote for the Carolina Quarterly. In addition, Bill is a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, for which he is black robe officer. He served as an orientation counsellor, a member of the IFC court, a member of the Summer School Student Government Board and has played varsity soccer. Bill came here in 1953 and graduated with an AB in English Jast spring. At present he is working toward a Master of Business Administration degree. After that, Bill says it is "purely speculative." He says he hopes to emulate the career of Horatio Alger. We hope Bill can do Horatio one better. What's Going On Friday.
