Franklin St. Open Till 10 P.M. .-. i - Edwards Wins Top Honors; Tatum Third Raleigh, Dec. 6 (AP) Earle Edwards, coach of North Caro lina State's Atlantic Coast Con ference football champions, today was named by the Atlantic Coast SporLswritcrs Assn. as The Coach ot the Year. Edwards received 58 first place votes from the 78 sportswriters. sportscasters and college publicity men balloting and scored 338 points out of a possible 390 to take the honors. Frank Howard of Clemson was runner up with 159 points. The points were awarded on a basis of five for first, three for second and one for third. Other coaches receiving votes were: Bill Murray of Duke. Tom my Mont of Maryland and Ben Martin of Virginia. Lxst year Paul Amen of Wake Forest won the award. With his team tabbed the "dark horse" of the ACC race this year, Edwards directed State to a 7-1-2 record and a 5-0-1 conference mark. The popular Wolfpack mentor, in his fourth year at the head coaching position at State College, saw his team also take Big Four honors by beating Carolina 7-0, Wake Forest 19-0 and tying Duke 1414. States record was its best since 1946 when N. C. State finished with a 8 2 record. The award was the second writers association hon or to be won by N. C. State. Dick Christy, its All-Amcrican back, was named player of the year curlier this week. By DAVE WIBLK Sophomore Dave Scurlock. Caro lina's fabulous middle-distance and cross-country runner has been plac ed on the 11)37 All-American Track Team for his outstanding perform ances in the 8150 yard run last spring. Scurlock will be presented a cert ificate in recognition of this award during the halftime of this after noon's basketball game between Carolina and Clemson. Robert A. Fctcr known in North Carolina track circles as the "father" of this state's track will make the pre sentation. 880 Records Scurlock. a o-4 180 pounder from Greensboro, lias ben setting track records since he wits in high school. He is the only North Carolinian to run a half-milo muter two minutes while in high school. He sot the standing record of 1:56.2 at the 1954 Slate High School meet. in the 36 years history of the NCAA. The winner of the event was Cali fornia's Don Bowden. the only American to run a mile under four minutes. Second was Ron Delaney who finished only one tenth of a second ahead of Scurlock. Other Records Scurlock also holds the school re cord in the 441) (48.4 and he anchor- This past month, he was runner up in the ACC cross-country cham pionships held at Wake Forest. Last spring. Scurlock was voted cutstanding performer at the ACC track championships after winning the 440, 880 and anchoring the win ning mile relay team. Duke Tough .. i The freshman game promises to be a battle royal for the Duke's will be fielding what they call their finest crop of freshman ever. To prove that the pre-season predictions were correct, the Blue Imps almost defeated the Duke varsity in a practice game. The varsity came out on top by only one point. Leading the Imps will be George Kistler a 6-8 high school AJ1 American from Philadelphia and 6-6 forward Tom Hurt. Hurt scor ed 32 points against the Wake Forest frosh, when Duke took Wake in their opener. Tar Babies Beat High Point The Tar Babies only contest to date was an 84-75 win over the High Point College Jayvees last Tuesday flight. The Tar Babies looked a little loose in their open er as the High Pointers pressed them the entire game. Six-five forward Doug Moe was high scor er, for the pighj . with 32 points. In today's game freshman Coach Ken Rosemond will start the same quint that opened the High Point game. At forwards will be Moe and Pete Longenecker, who stands at 6-4. At center th Tar Babies will find their tallest and heaviest man, 6-8, 220 pounder, Hugh Don- ohue. The backcourt duties will go to Bill Hart a six footer, and 6-2 Tarn Shuford. . , Strong Bench Carolina has a good reserve crew this year, recently reinforc: ed by freshman footballers who made the quick change, forward Bob Deaton and guard Dee Heath ! er head the list, followed closely by former footballers Russ Hol lers, Lenny Beck and John Hk ey.
