Not only do they have ito wade
through such strong opposition as
Notre Dame, Southern California,
and Tennessee, but they also have
,to face every member of the Atlan
tic Coast Conference at least once.
Clemson figures to be the num
ber one test for .the Tar Heels in
the conference, but any of the three
ncn-conference opponents could be
difficult to knock off.
Next Saturday Jim Tatum's elev
en, anxious to avenge a 7-0 beating
at the hands of North Carolina State,
meets the Wolfpack in a clash in
which the Tar Heels will undoubted
ly be favored to cop, since State
has lost Dick Christy, their All-
America halfback.
The following Saturday the teann
journeys to South Carolina to en
gage the Clemson Tigers in a con
test that may well decide the win
fier of the Atlantic Coast Confer
ence. Coach Frank Howard of
Clemson has been building a team
which figures to mature this year,
and the battle can only be called
a toss-up.
Despite the length of their trip,
the Tar Heels are favorites to beat
the Trojans of Southern California
in their bout in California, Oct 3.

Sugar Bowl bound?
At least ore national magazine
as picked Jim Tatum's UNC foot
ball team to spend New Year's day
playing footbaU in New Orleans, and
perhaps with some reason.
This year' eleven has shown prom
ise of not only bettering its 6-4 rec
ord of last year, but of having one
of the best season's of any in Car
olina history.
The signal-calling position is three
and four dt?p with talent, both
holdover lettermen from last year
and newcomers from the freshman
team.
Heading the quarterback brigade
is Jack CwrrfTiings who is getting
a run for his money this fall from
Nelson Lowe, a junior who played
only one garr-e last year.
Cummings, already holding one
school record for liis passing in
the Virginia game last year, may
turn out to be one of the bst
quarterbacks that the Tar Heels
yer possessed.
Russ Hollers and Skip Clement.
two sophomo"es with unusual prom
ise, complete the quarterback corps.
Somebody said early last week.
that this would be a year for aerial
artistry. That prophecy may well
hold true with four capable dingers
at quarterback.
In all twenty-three lettermen are
returning from last year's Tar heel
team. The big loss was that of end
Buddy Payne, who captained last
year's squad.
The large job of filling Payne's
shoes falls to Mac Turlington, Don
Kemper, ami Al Goldstein, all of
wham seem capable of doing more
than an adequate job in the pass
snaring positions.
Co-captain Phil Blazer heads aa
impressive list of proven linemen
and ascending newcomers at the
taekle slots. Blazer, a senior from
WTiitaker. P a., is potentially an Ail
American .nd during the early -practice
sessions of this season has
been living up to his billingv Vivi
Behind hirn Don Redding,, and Don
Starlings are the ones' most like
ly to see a good deal of action dur
ing the season, buUthe position is
stacked deep in capable men.
Lettermen Fred Swearingen and
Jack Lineb?rger are expected to
lead the Tar Heels at guard, how
ever, this still depends oi whether
Lineberger's. neck responds well
after the injury he suffered last
season.
Fred Mueller and Frank Riggs
.vill take most of the slack out of
he position, and seem to be almost
as capable as the tw0 regulars of
.ast year.
The center slot is capably filled
by Ronnie Koes, who was a stand
out last year and should be even
better this year. Giving him a biff
r ! nnrl i . K ! . ! . Ml I T-k
uauu at tin; pusiuun will De itip
Hawkins, a sophomore standout in
,pring practice.
Sonny Folckomer, showing bril
liant form in practice, may be the
dark horse to cop one of the start
ing halfback slots. He faces stiff
competition fir the post in the per
sons of Jim Schuler, Em-U DeCanti?
.nd Daley Goff, all lettermen from
asx year. Wade Smith and Danny
Jroze should add depth to the half
ijack. picture.
A real battle is being waged for
he fullback slot between Don
Coker and Don. Klockak. a returnee
from the seavice. Both are powerful
runners, ami both should see much
,ction this year.
Ed Lipski will be up their fighting
for a starting berth also and his
experience during last year's cam
paign out to bear him in good stead
is year.
The only severe blow the Tar
leels have suffered so far is the
loss of co-captain Curtis Hathaway
.vhose broken arm sustained last
spring was failed to mend. He prob
ably will miss the entire season. .
What with the new substitution
mles, making it possible for Caro
ina to drav on its depth at every
osition, the Tar Heels and . Jim
Tatum may well go all the way to
the Sugar BowL Who knows? They
may win that too.
