trustees rejected the proposed gift.
In litigation which began in 1913
and ended in IM1, attorneys for the
University finally emerged with the
right to the Ackland estate to build
an art department and galleries In
Chapel Hill.
Tlie late O Max Gardner was the
attorney for the University, serv
ing without compensation. After
Governor Gardner's death, his law
firm carried on the court battle
successfully. (Members of the Gard
rcr family of Shelby and Fred W.
Morrison. Ward E. Lattin and
Thomas J. Boddow of the Gardner
Law Firm in Washington will at
tend the dedication.

ACKLAND ENGRAVING FROM PRINCETON UNIVERSITY ' Baachanal With a Vine Press" is the title
of theitngraving by Andrea Mantegna which has ben loaned by the Art Museum of Princeton Univer
sity for the Inaugural Exhibition of the William Hayes Ackland Art Center September 20. The first
exhibition will feature paintings, engravings, etchings, drawings and works of sculpture from Ameri
can college and university art galleries.

Dr. James W. Murdoch, a 50-
year-old Scot who is credited with
much of the rapid progress made
by North Carolina's mental hospit i
als in recent years, died in N. C.
Memorial Hospital Tuesday.-

tem since 1955, Dr. Murdoch suf
fered a severe cerebral hemor
rhage while working in his Raleigh
off ice Monday.

pitals in Scotland, England, Malaya
and Australia, Dr. Murdoch came
ot the United States and to North
Carolina in 1947. Serving briefly
on the staff of the State 'Hospital
in Raleigh, he was later sent to
Butner as its first superintendent.
Gov. Hodges described Dr. Mur
doch as "a very dedicated public
servant" who "rendered outstand
ing service for many years."

Houston, former lecturer in UNC's
Department of Radio, Television
and Motion Pictures, were conduct
ed at 11 a.m. yesterday in the
Chapel Hill cemetery by the Rev.
Vance Barron, Fastor of the Pres
byterian Church.
A playwright, novelist, short
story writer, and teacher in the
! University, Houston died at 5:20
p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Hospital
after an illness of several weeks
ille had undergone several stomach
operations in the past month.
Studying drama and writing ex
perimental plays at the University,
Houston won a Rockefeller Fellow
ship in playwriting here for 1938,
1939, and -940. He was one of the

or subjects of their own choosing
were recently broadcast by the Na
tional Broadcasting Co.
