Soph sensation Harry Bloom, per haps the best swimmer in the con firmee, came throush with his us ual two victories. Bloom took first place in both the 220 and 100 free st) le events. Handy Dodson remained undefeat ed, as is Bloom, with another win in the 2(o butterfly. The Tar Heel swords men arc coached by Pcblcy Barrow and Dave Evans. Evans' foilsmcn, led by Charles Tucks, defeated the AMA team 5 bouts to 4. Carolina's Dave Scurlock turned in the finest individual performance when he covered the 880 distance in 1:51.0, only .7 off the world's record. Carolina won the freshman meet by rolling up 31 points to 27Vt for Duke, 19 for State, and 10 for Wake Forest. The score was tied 21 times, in cluding 51-34 at the end of regula t;on play, and neither team ever had more than a 4-point advantage. Clcmson scored on a long shot by Don Carver shortly after the start of the overtime period and then promptly instituted a tight zone de fense. Dickie Prater broke through once for South Carolina to even the score at 5o-5f. Prater bagged 18 points, high for the game. Clcmson. which boosted its ACC record to 4-9, was slightly more ac curate on its field goal shooting, hitting on 37 per cent. South Caro lina managed only 33 per cent. South Carolina's ACC record is rbled the Gamecocks to take the edge on rebounds, 41-36. Dutch Shample and Walt Gibbons led the Clcmson scoring with 12 points each. Doug Hoffman tallied 10.
