With the tiny blocks and bits of plastic Director Frank Meldau and lus" three co-workers, David Kitz miller; John " Stockard and .Anna Robbms, have rebuilt the campus on; a scale of 150 of an inch to one . foot: From the stadium to the plane- j tariom, the model includes every structure visible on the UNC cam-j pu aS well. as a few buildings still; in "the planning stage. On the lay out the Ehringhaus and Burton CraigeK dormitories,- Coker- Hall (botany), .Toy-Dey (foreign Ian gu3ges),A the public' health -bufld-ing.and the additions to Hill and Swain Halls are completed and in the proper locations. -;' ' . . Since the layout includes a 290-foot variance in . levels;, the highest point on the model is made of 145 different hancUcarved levels. The. scale model has 110 major buildings, not including the-Memo-. rial Hospital complex. Each of these university-owned buildings is reconstructed accurately in shape, scale colof and design. Each ol- oimn, window and door are visible on the tiny buildings..; 4 Even UNC trees, parking .lots, paths and streets will be included on the model. Over 2000 miniature trees, 1 made of lichen", wire, glue and green" spray paint have been fashiened already. The parking lots and streets '-will' be painted in an asphalt color:1 I Besidejs. the ma j6r bulldmgs, the scale model includes ,300 minor buildings in "t the dpwntqwh Chapel Hill area, nearby residential, areas and Victory Village. For the mosti in shape -and scale, but Victory Vil-1 lage : is also painted in the actual colors of the various living units. Major Undertaking The scale model, which measures about 14x16 feet,' is a major under taking for Meldau who has been working oh it for almost a year. Before the actual construction be bah, 1 aerial photographs of the campus and original blueprints of all the. university buildings had to be found or especially made. Build ings like the Monogram Club and private homes for which there were no blueprints available had to be accurately measured and . planned. Once the scale model is com pleted, it will be used in the long range planning of the physical growth of the university. Archi tects and officials of the univer sity will be able to see readily the ground areas and locations of the buildings as well as the land levels on ; which new buildings must be constructed. Various officials of the univer sity have already seen the model, but its first public debut will not be until .October when it will be displayed at the North Carolina Trades Fair in Charlotte. After several scheduled tours, the model wilt be returned to UNC where it will be on public display. Saiifqrd, Hodges Speak At Gardner Picture Ceremony 4 -. SMALL WORLD, ISN'T IT?
