Ray Respess, a 6-4 senior who earned himself a place on the first team as a sophomore, has received the nod in 14 games. Smith opened the season against Clemson with Cunning ham, Lewis, Respess, Brown, and Bennett. That same group started and lost to Georgia in the second game and a change was made. Morrison took Brown's place and North Carolina beat South Carolina and Kentucky. That is the only combination that has been completely successful. Gauntlett took Bennett's place in the Tulane game and the line-up remained the same Cunningham, Lewis, Respess, Morrison, Gauntlett for a total of five games. They won three of four . be fore dropping the VPI Invita tional championship to Ala bama. After that Coach Smith experimented with 6-6 Mirken and Brown in. place of Gaunt lett and Morrison but Florida whipped that combination by 19 points.. . . For the' following gameCoach Smith; went back to his original line-up but the Tar Heels con tinued -to lose, taking .their first ACC defeat at the hands of Maryland 1 Against Wake Forest, in the 12th game of the season Smith completely revamped the North Carolina starting unit. Along with Cunningham and Lewis he used Brown, Mirken, and Ben nett. Wake won' by 22. For the Duke game Smith dialed a ; new combination, using Respess, Hassell, and Gauntlett along with Bob and Billy. Those five pulled a stun ning upset against the Blue Devils, but then blew a 14 point lead in a loss to N. C. State, and next won over Vir ginia. X The- seventh combination came against Maryland Satur day. In that game Mirken, who has , appeared in all 16 games, got his third starting job along with -Johnny Yokley. IT I!
