Swimmers Face
Unbeaten Terps
By PERRY McCARTY
DTII. Sports Writer
Maryland's unbeaten Terra
pins invade Bowman Gray Pool
tonight for a showdown with
UNC's Blue Dolphins. Last
year at College Park, the Tar
Heels spoiled the Terps chances
for a perfect season and went
on to share the ACC crown via
a 48-47 win.
Coach Bill Campbell and his
charges will be out to settle
last year's chagrin tonight.
While the format is much the
same as a year ago. there are
several significant changes.
Dual meet records have no
bearing on the conference
crown this year. The Champion
ship is determined solely by the
ACC Championship Meet next
weekend at College Park. Yet
the Dolphins desperately need
the momentum of a victory over
the Terps to carry them into
the Championship competition.
Both Florida State U. and
N.C. State have shaded Caro
lina in earlier meets. So the
pressure is squarely on Mary
land to become the first un
beaten team in their school's
history. The Dolphins also have
the all-important home pool ad
vantage. Coach Pat Earey feels that
his troops are In good condi
tion both physically and emo
tionally and as ready as they
will ever be. This is the first
meet we have pointed to since
the holidays and we should

make our best showing of the

It will take just that to come
close to sending Coach Camp
bell and his crew away on the
short end. Not only have the
Terps posted faster times in
nearly every event, but they
have tremendous depth to back
up their strong front line.
Don Dunphey and Raul Rebel
liard along with sophomore
sprinter Phil Denkevitz and
freestyler Steve Nullmeyer will
spark the visitors. No doubt,
the outcome will hinge on sev
eral very close races with sec
onds and thirds making the final
difference.
Diving will be especially im
portant. Here UNC's hopes ride
on senior Dave Moody and Guy
Smith.
Pete Worthen will renew his
sprint rivalry with Denkewitz.
Worthen won both 50 and 100
freestyle sprints in last year's
Freshman Invitational Meet,
after losing to Denkevitz dur
ing the season.
.Both teams are sure to go
for the seven points in the open
ing medley relay. Jack Hayden,
Rick Forum, Fred Lipp, and
Davis Roberts have been more
than adequate all season long.
They will have to combine for
their best effort yet to edge the
Terp quartet.
Senior co-captain Harrison
Merrill, along with John Shel
don, will face Nullmeyer in the
distance freestyle events. Coach
Earey has received good mile
age from his sophomores to date
and will again be counting on
Steve Hildenbrand, Allen Mc
Donald, Tommy Adams, Strud
Norfieet, Jim Bernuth as well as
Hayden and Worthen.
Seniors - Chip Smith, Scot
Smiley, Roberts, Merrill, and
Moody will be gunning for their
third win over the Terps.
With the conference cham
pionships a week away," both
teams have enough at stake to
pull out all stops and go-for-broke
to win. The momentum of
a victory and the impetus of
fast times are vital psychologi
cal advantages that will be at
stake tonight at eight.

ball team pulled away in the sec
ond overtime . to defeat the Tar
Babies, 99-93, Wednesday night
In a wild game which saw 10
players, five on each squad, dis
qualified with excessive fouls,
the Tar Babies kept battling back
to finally tie the game 75-75 in
regulation time.
The Tar Babies had a chance
to win in regulation time and
then again in the first overtime,
but both times missed their final
shot. In the first overtime, a 45
foot desperation toss by Jim Frye
bounced around the basket before
finally 'falling off.
It was the first victory for the
Wolflets in three games with the
Carolina frosh this season.
State's Alex Cheek hit on a
jump shot with 15 seconds left to
send the game into a second over
time after the Tar Babies had led
most of the period.

ponents with the Tar Heels
meeting Clemson after State
faces South Carolina.
There is nothing McGuire
would like better than to beat
his old school, especially since
the Gamecocks have been hav
ing problems this year.
With a 6-11 season mark and
2-8 in the ACC, the Roosters
are a game ahead of last place
Virginia. They have been hurt
badly by the loss of star sopho
more forward Gary Gregor and
guard Jerry Croke due to aca
demic difficulties.
Since their departure. 6-9
center Jirn Fox has emerged as
the big star and as the ACC's
top rebounder with more than
15 a game.
John Schroeder (6-6) and Al
Helping out Fox are forwards
Salvadori (6-9) and guards Jjm
Finnegan and Earl Lovelac.
For the Tar Heels both games
are crucial if they are to stay
in the race for second place and
the right to stay out of DukeV
bracket in the tournament. Last
year UNC edged USC 84-81 but
lost to Clemson 97-90 in double
overtime at the Queen City
doubleheader.
If Billy Cunningham is to
win his third straight confer
ence rebounding crown he will
have to overtake Fox this week
end. Two big games in Char
lotte could give his All-Amcn-can
chances a big boost.
After this weekend the Tar
Heels have only two league
games left with Virginia Tues
day and Duke next Saturday in
Woollen Gym.

ACC Race Enters Final Week
With the ACC race entering its final week, some interesting
battles are shaping up for seedings in the conference tournament.
The Tar Heels' victory over State Wednesday has brought
about a three-way battle for second place. If the Tar Heels win
their last four conference encounters, they are assured of at least
a tie for the second. :
Going into this weekend's games. State and Maryland are
tied for second with a 7-4 conference mark while the Tar Heels
are a half game behind at 6-4.
Thanks to a perfect 8-0 week, my guessing percentage jumped
to .885 with 23 correct and only three misses.
CAROLINA vs. SOUTH CAROLINA at Charlotte In the open
ing game of the North-South doubleheader, the Tar Heels shouldn't
have too much trouble winning their fourth straight. The Game
cocks can rebound but that's about all. Carolina, by 26.
CAROLINA vs. CLEMSON at Charlotte The Tar Heels make
it two in a row over their Southern neighbors. Carolina, by 8.
STATE vs. CLEMSON at Charlotte The Tigers' sophomores
have come on strong, but State should win a close one. .State by 6.
STATE vs. SOUTH CAROLINA at Charlotte The Wolfpack
completes a sweep for the Tar Heel state. State, by 19.
DUKE vs. NOTRE DAME at Chicago The Blue Devils try to
uphold the ACC's prestige in the Midwest. They will. Duke, by 11.
MARYLAND at NAVY The Terps could make life rough for
the Midshipmen and their star Billy Radcliffe. .Maryland, by 7.
TEMPLE at WAKE FOREST The Owls aren't playing in
the Palestra this time, and the Deacons are due to break their
slump. Wake, by 5.
VIRGINIA at CAROLINA The Cavaliers gave the Tar Heels
a scare at Charlottesville, but it should be a rout at Woollen Gym
as the Heels tune up for Duke. Carolina, by 31.
DUKE at MARYLAND The Terps have their eyes on second
place, and the Blue Devils may be in for a shock. It could be a
major upset. Maryland, by 5.
