"Should we stop bombing
North Viet Nam?"
This question was asked 23
students on campus yesterday.
If their answers are typical of
others, the campus is over
whemingly in favor of continued
bombing.
Twenty - eight students an
swered no, while only four
thought the United States should
stop bombing. Some of the rea
sons given were:
Carl Swann, senior RTVMP
and English major from Kings
port, Tenn., had the only divid
ed opinion. "As a person in
volved with people, I say yes,
we should stop bombing. As a
person involved in politics, I
say no. 1 m opposed to killing
people, but we're living in a po
litical world. We've made our
commitments and we have to
uphold them."
uarDara Ann f rank, jumor
recreation administration major
from Columbus, Inc., said the
United States should stop bomb
ing. "It's not fair to kill people
who are really not involved."
Paula Johnson, junior English
major from Benson, said "No.
I feel this is a moral situation.
We have to continue bombing
to stand for our own values."
Jack Creech, senior , English
major from Greensboro, favored
cessation of the bombing, bas
ing his answer on the proposed
peace negotiations. "It doesn't
seem like we're for peace if we
keep bombing."
But Joyce Deaton, junior
English major from Charlotte,
said, "We would not be in any
better position to talk . about
peace if we stopped."
Joe Snyder, junior RTVMP
major ' from Asheville, favored
continued bombing. "The only
way we can win this war is to
beat Worth Viet Nam into sub
mission. Prior to the bombing,
we were always on the defen
sive. We've got to beat hell out
of them."
John Greenbacker, sophomore
political science major from
Norfolk, Va., said "I don't think
we should stop. This is an ex
tremely touchy subject. I am
definitely in favor of increasing
the number of troops in South
Viet Nam. It would be more
correct in international eyes to

limit -our activities to defending
the country we're committed to.
Easing off the bombing would
be more conducive to a peace
settlement, but I don't think we
should, stop altogether. We
should never have gotten into
Viet Nam in the first place, but
now that we're there, we must
do something."
Harry D. Holiingswortb, Jr.,
junior journalism major from
Durham, said "No. We're fight
ing a war in Viet Nam and the
only way to win is to carry it
to the source. To stop the bomb
ings would be one of the worst
tactical blunders we could
make."
Fred Thomas, freshman math
major from Concord, said "No,
definitely not. There is no rea
son why we should stop. The

question is whether it was ad
visable to start in the first
place. I think it was. Our ob
jective is to stop the commu
nists in Viet Nam. We haven't
done that yet. The Red Chinese
at this point are not capable of
providing a defense equal to our
offense. If the war drags on,
conceivably they could be a lot
stronger. If we feel we have a
cause worth defending, we
should do it now." !
Vkk Bost, graduate English
and second-year law from Salis-i
bury, said, "No. I think we've
reached the point of no return.!
It's either stay or lose face. Not
only would it be a loss of pres
tige, but it would mean we'd be
defaulting on our obligations to
the nations of Southeast Asia.
Such a move on our part would
put them in jeopardy."
Jim Finison, graduate busi
ness administration from
Greensboro, said, "No. We have
to put up a show of strength.
We've gone too far to back
down."
Jim Robertson, sophomore
business administration major
from Burlington, said, "No, in
deed not. For the simple fact
that the Chinese will not be
forced into any act of aggres
sion by these raids."

what do you plan to do with
it? You'll find that many good
jobs require women with-college

often require women with sec

knowledge, too. Will you have
marketable skills? Katharine

By solving problems In astronautics, Air Fores
scientists expand man's knowledge of the universe. Lt. Howard McICinley, M.A.,
tells about research careers on the Aerospace Team.
(Lt.McKinley holds degrees in electronics and electri
cal engineering from the Georgia Institute of Tech
nology and the Armed Forces Institute of Technology.
He received the 1963 Air Force Research & Devel
opment Award for his work with inertial guidance
components. Here he answers some frequently-asked
questions about the place of college-trained men and
women in the US. Air Force.)
Is Air Fore research really advanced, compared to
what others are doing? It certainly is. As a. matter of
fact, much of the work being done right cow in uni
versities and industry had its beginnings in Air Force
research and development projects. After all, when
you're involved in the development of guidance sys
tems for space vehicles-a current Air Force project
in America's space program you're working on the
frontiers of knowledge.
What areas do Air Force scientists get fciTolred in?
Practically any you can name. Of course the principal
aim of Air Force research is to expand our aerospace
capability. But in carrying out this general purpose,
individual projects explore an extremely wide range
of topics. "Side effects" of Air Force research are
often as important, scientifically, as the mam thrust.
How important is the work a recent graduate can
expect to do? It's just as important and exciting as his
own knowledge and skill can make it. From my own
experience, I can say that right from the start I ra
doing vital, absorbing research. Thats one of the
things that's so good about an Air Force career-it
EiveTyoung people the chance to do meaningful work
in the areas that really interest them.

many varied and challenging administrative-managerial
positions. Remember, the Air Force h a vast and
complex organization. It takes a great many different
kinds of people to keep it running. But there are two
uniform criteria: you've got to be intelligent, and
you've got to be willing to work hard.
What sort of future do I have la the Ate Force? Just
as big as you want to make it. In the Air Force, talent
has a way of corning to the top. It has to be that v. ay,
if we're going to have the best people Li ths riht
places, keeping America strong and free
Whafs the best way to start an Air Forte career? An
excellent waythe way I started is through Air Force
Officer Training School. GTS is a three-month course,
given at Lackland Air Force Base, near San Antonio,
Texas, that's open to both men and women. You can
apply when you're within 210 days of graduation, or
after you've received your degree.
How long S3 I fee commixed to serve? Fcrcr years
from the time you graduate from OTS and receive
your commission. If you go on to pilot or navistcr
training, the four years starts when you're awarded
your wings.
Are there other way fo become aa Air Force officer?
There's Air Force ROTC active at many colleges
and universities, and the Air Force Academy, where
admission is by examination and Congressional ap
pointment. If you'd like more information on any Air
Force program, you can get it from the Professor of
Aerospace Studies (if there's one ca your campus) or
from an Air Force recruiter.
