The Terps have been con ference champions for years and years, and must defeat UNC and Duke this weekend to take the conference laurels for 1965. They toppled Vir ginia, 13 - 9, earlier in the season. The Cavaliers handed Coach Cony Steele's team its only loss, 12-9, at Charlottes ville March 30, 12-9. Parker In Shape All - America candidate Jeff Parker is in top condition for the game. The rangy attack . man has been troubled with flu, and only played half of the Duke game which the Tar Heels won, 14-7. Maryland's attack features sophomore John Heim, who has piled up an amazing 21 goals and 35 assists in ten games for the Terps. The team takes to the road today for weekend games at Maryland and Virginia, and -victories in both would put Coach Walter Rabb's men in position to take or at least tie for the pennant. The team's record is now 4-5, but Carolina is only 1 1-2 games behind the league-leading Cavaliers, who hold the top spot by .025 percentage points over Maryland's 6-4 slate. All other teams in the conference have lost at least five. No games were played in the conference yesterday. Wednesday Wake Forest pulled into a tie for seventh place with State by trimming Duke, 8-1, so the last place in the league is separated from first by only two games. Goalie Jack Schofield has backed up a shaky defense well, chalking up 148 saves in the ten meets. However, the opposition has averaged 9.1 goals per game, and today's clash is certain to be hign- scorins. UNC goalie Harvey Stanley has held every opponent ex cept Virginia and Washington and Lee to less than 10 goals, and the attack has broken in to double figures every game except Maryland. The Tar Heels will be out to avenge last year's debacle, , which saw the Terps wm, 25 3. The College Park encounter was the first time the schools have played. Only One Loss Navy, considered to be the nation's top team, inflicted the only loss on the Terps, 13-7. The visitors have beaten such highly - ranked teams as Army (15-13), Baltimore (19 . 15) and Brown (16-12), while also trimming such lesser lights as Princeton, Cornell, New Hampshire, Harvard and Penn State. Coach Steele is expected to go with his usual starting lineup of Parker, Stanley, Tom Thayer, Tim Balch, Bob Mor rison, Jim Bischoff, Andy Cul pepper, Jake Hubbard, John Ward and Bud Adams, who moved from midfield to attack when Sandy Reider was in jured against Washington and Lee and has contributed eight goals in two games. - In addition to Schofield and Heim, Maryland is expected to counter with John Ken worthy, Al Lowe, Pete Smith, Bob Rombro, Ed Helman, Bill Buck, Larry Bagranoff and Fred Steele. righthander Danny Walker are slated to pitch for the Tar Heels this weekend. They will probably be opposed by Lar ry Gammon of Virginia, who sports a 0.50 earned run av erage, and Jerry Bark, Mary land's sophomore ace who has averaged over 1 1-2 strikeouts an inning. Weak hitting has cost the Tar Heels dearly in the past few conference games. Since Bill "Chilly" Danne mann was relieved in the Maryland game two weeks ago, Tar Heel pitchers have produced four straight spark ling performances, giving up one, two, three and four runs, yet the team has been lucky to break even. - The outstanding perform ance was Dan Walker's 13 inning gem against hard-hitting Clemson, won by the Tar Heels ,4-3, when Bill Taylor singled with the bases loaded. Black In Slump Gary Black , has managed but one hit, a game - winning homer against South Carolina, . in his last 18 trips, and Dan Talbott and Dick Fleming have been faltering lately. Catcher John Shaw, who led the team last year with .375 but now is under .200, had two solid hits against Wake Forest and may be coming back to his formConsidered the finest backstop in the league, his weak hitting has burdened the team. If either Leonard or Walker weaken, Dannemann will be waiting in the wings. In the last four conference games, he has been in the bullpen no later than the third inning each time, but only has seen service for one - third of an inning. Typing-Mimeographing Gnnningliam 4 I . J Golfers Seek Over Seven By DICK SMITH Asst. DTH Sports Editor Tar Heel golfers travel to Pinehurst today for the ACC Tournament to try and break up a near monopoly on the crown. The meet will be played on the tough No. 2 course. For the last ten years, Wake Forest and Duke have taken all but two of the champion ships, with the men from Car olina winning only the 1960 and 1963 editions. As in bas ketball, ACC golf teams play a full season and then a tour nament, the winner of the tourney being the conference champion. In 11 previous tournaments. Deacon linkmen have either won outright or shared in the individual title seven times. Arnold Palmer started the hab it in 1954. They are favored to take their fifth conference crown this year, led by No. 1 man Dennis Milne and Jay Sigel. Of the top ten finishers in the 1964 tourney at Forest Lake Country Club, Columbia, S. C, six will return this year. Besides Wake's Milne, they include Skip Tucker and Ed Hoopes of UNC, Bob McFerron of Maryland, Eddie Brown of South Carolina, and Dan Hill of Duke. Baldwin Leads Team The Tar Heels have been led this season by No. 1 man John Baldwin, a junior from Port Washington, N. Y., and by returning lettermen Skip Tucker, Ed Hoopes and Les Fleisher. The team is round ed out by three seniors and five sophomore's. Baldwin has played first po sition all season and has lost but two matches, one to Sigel, he also beat once. Tucker, the No. 2 man, has lost two and tied one. Both men are considering the PGA tour after gradua tion. Tucker, a Morehead scholar, says he'll "enter Law School in the fall, finish, tell my wife to pack the bags and turn pro. long enough to find EUROPE 50 DAYS $575! Baldwin and Tucker agree on their opinions about top professional golfers. Jack Nicklaus is the greatest who dver lived, Julius Boros the "classiest," and Tony Lema has the "best style of the pros playing this year." Both respect Arnold Palmer as "the man who has made golf the popular sport it is today." Baldwin's game improved most during his freshman year here when he played often with Pete Green, former All America golfer for Carolina. According to Tucker, Bald win's best shots are his tee shots and his long irons. INSTANT SILENCE For information write: Academic Aids, Box 969 Berkeley, California 94701 Available at :'! The Carolina star, three times chosen as All - Confer ence center, will probably play at forward for the 76ers, as that team has already found its starting center in Wilt Chamberlain. The Stilt has talked of retirement, how ever, and Billy might play at his old spot if Chamberlian leaves the scene. Incidentally, Wilt was on the 1957 Kansas team that came in second in the NCAA finals defeated by the Tar Heels. Also chosen Wednesday , were Davidson's Fred Hetzel, the first round choice of New York, and Elon's Jesse Bran son, who was called up by Philadelphia, as was Wake's Ronnie Watts. In all, 11 North .
