day in Raleigh, the Tar Heel
netmen . put a lovely ribbon
on the package yesterday by
winning all five of their final
matches in singles play.
Number . one man for the
Tar Heels, O. H. Parish start
ed off the singles action yes
terday for UNC, downing his
opponent Jim Stevens of Vir
ginia in a three-game set: 6-2,
2-6, 8-6.
Bronson Van Wyck took an
other three-game duel for the
Heels, defeating Larry Modze
lewSki: 6-2, 0-6, 6-0.
Nat West again conquered
his man in just two games,
taking a quick pair from Ken
Donnan: 6-4, 6-4.
Tom Chewning beat Howard
Crow 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
James Ledbetter rounded
out the Tar Heel victory pa
rade, downing Clemson's Tom
Long in a three-game battle:
6-1, 6-8, 6-3.
In doubles competition, the
Carolina netmen were again
the most impressive of the
field.
Parish-Van Wyck served up
a two-game victory over R'ahn
Long of Clemson: 6-3, 7-5.
The Goddard-Oettinger two

(AP) Mighty Randy Matson
smashed the 70-foot barrier in
the shot put Saturday, break
ing his own pending world's
record of 69 feet, -inch with
an astounding throw of 70-7.
The Olympics Games silver
medal winner's' record throw
came in the preliminaries of
the Southwest Conference
track and field meet.
The 6-6 12, 256-pound Texas
A&M sophomore had throws
of 68-8, 70-7, 67-9, 69-3 and
68-4 for the greatest series in
' history. He scratched on his
final throw.
Matson bettered the listed
"world record of 67-10 held by
Dallas Long of Southern Cali
fornia on four of the six tries.
Matson threw with a brace on
his left knee where he has a
pulled i ligament. Every put
brought a mighty cheer from
the crowd of 3,000 that came
largely to watch him.

Golfers Capture
ACC Championship
PINEHURST (AP) John
Baldwin, junior from Port
Washington, N. Y., won the in
dividual title while leading his
North Carolina teammates to
the Atlantic Coast Conference
golf championship Saturday.
Baldwin, No. 1 man on the
Tar Heel team, shot 69, three
under par, over the 6,800-yard
No. 2 course of the Pinehurst
Country Club, had a 35-hole
total of 144, even par.
; Tied for second, three shots
back were Don Hedrick of
Wake Forest, first day co-leader;
Trip O'Donnell of Duke and
surprising Dick Van Leuvan,
No. 7 player on the North
Carolina team.
. Jay Sigel of Wake Forest,
1963 champion, was fifth at
148. His 71 was one of only
four sub-par rounds Saturday.
Baldwin had nines of 34-35.
Going out he had three birdies,
but took a bogey five on the
difficult fifth hole. On the
back nine he birdied the 14th
and parred the rest.
North Carolina had a five
man team total of 744 in win
ning its third title and first
since 1960. Wake Forest was
second, 11 shots back. Mary
land and South Carolina, which
shared team honors last year,
finished fourth and , fifth re
spectively. Dennis Milne of Wake For
est, co-champion last year, fin
ished 12 shots off the pace at
156.
