Friday, February 23. 1DC3 TOE DAILY TAB HEEL L Face Tough Terps And WVU Mailmen Head Into 'Firey furnace' RITA BARNES This Is Rita This is what Rita Barnes, a standout on the girls' basketball team, really looks like. Thursday's Tar Heel featured a story on her but an unfortunate foul up caused the wrong picture to be run with the article. The Tar Heel apologues for the error. By RON SIIINN Special to The Daily Tar Heel "Everyone knows you only get tempered steel by going in to the firey furnace, and that's exactly what we're doing this weekend." With that 'Dr. Sam Barnes University of North Carolina's English professor turned wrestling c o a c b de scribes the corning weekend which has his team pitted against Maryland Friday night and West Virginia Saturday night. Both are on the road. "Nobody but Carolina would schedule Maryland and West Virginia on successive days," Barnes says. "That's not bravery. .Jbut bravado." - A new look will prevail over the Tar Heels this weekend with the addition of nine freshman wrestlers on the varsity roster. Both opponents are having fine seasons. West Virginia, under first year coach George Wedeil, has been impressive. Maryland is 4-3 with losses to national powers Penn State and Lehigh. The always powerful Terps can throw six defending ACC champs into the fray. North Carolina is expected to irve sev eral veterans jn the two matches. The Tar Heels have dual meet wins over South Carolina and Clemson and a four team victory over Wake Forest, N.C. State, and South Carolina already to their credit. UNC's opponents Saturday will be Duke, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Davidson, N.C. College, and East Carolina. The scoring will be on a 5-3-2-1 basis to determine the overall team winner. - The field events will begin on Friday evening at 7:30. Rick Wilson of UNC who is un defeated this season in the pole vault, and the Tar Heel's Tony Blanchard, who missed the school record in the shot put last week by an eighth of an inch, should be standout performers in the field events. The runnings events will get underway Saturday at 1:33. Duke's Jeff Howser should be outstanding in the hurdles. UNC will look to Mike Williams in the l,CG0-yard run, Ken Helms in the mile and Truett Goodwin in the two mile for leading performances.
