By RICK GRAY of The Daily Tar Heel Staff Friday night's action in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tourna ment offered two kinds of action fast and furious and cool and cautious. All-America Larry Miller led the Tar Heels to a 82-79 overtime victory over Frank McGuire's fighting Gamecocks, and Eddie Biedenbach popped in two field goals to lead N.C. State's scoring in a 12-10 win over Duke, which set at seven ACC records all for the least of something. The UNC-USC contest was almost of replay of the two games that the Heels lost at the end of the regular season's play. South Carolina won on Wednesday in regulation play by 187-86, and Vic Bubas, Mike Lewis and Company with their new discovery Mike Lind tarred the Carolina quintet by the same score in three overtimes over in Durham. ' Larry Miller turned a typical game, at least in the first half. He led the Heels to a 51.1 percentage at the end of the first twen ty minutes with 19 points. The Pennsylvanian only hit for five points in the second half and the overtime, but guards Dick Grubaf, from Schenectady, N.Y., and Gerald Tuttle, from London of the Bluegrass country, turned their best games of the year. Grubar hit for 20 points, playing the second half with four fouls beside his name on the scoring books, and Tuttle sank two overtime free throws that clinched the semi-final game for the Heels. And then there is Rusty Clark. The carrot-topped junior from Fayetteville playing the first game of his varsity career without committing a personal foul while pulling in 16 rebounds and scoring 11 points and playing longer than he ever had before. Then there was the State-Duke game. It too went down to the wire with the competitors neck and neck, but the score was not pushing the eighty mark; it was struggling to get into double figures. State Norman Sloan took a lesson from Carolina coach Dean Smith and threw a deep, deep freeze against the Blue Devils In the 1966 tourney, the Dukes won a similar game from Carolina bv the score of 20-21, but this time the strategy worked. State entered the final round of the tourney against Carolina and people throughout the state were wondering if Sloan was planning to put the ball on ice against the Heels. The game was boring, even if it was close. The television network just had to get in commercials, and they did Sut stopping tl;e ;action commerdals were f ofa PnKltl,,Sre W3S 3 l0t move movement theTe 'thin on the court of the Charlotte Colsieum.
