with a smashing victory over
Maryland yesterday, 70 to 43.
What Coach Pat Earey had
termed their "severest test of
the season," appeared to be an
easy victory.

A tough guy named Butch
brings his six-gun into Chapel
Hill Monday night, aiming to
shoot down the baskets at
Carmichael Auditorium.
Butch Zatezalo, defending
Atlantic Coast Conferenct
scoring champion, will carry
along four pals on the Clemson
Tigers to face Carolina in the
first ACC shootout for both
schools.
Zatezalo is the chief gunner
The Dolphins won 8 of 13
events including both halves of
the diving competition.
Cuch Humphrey took two
strong firsts in the 1 and 3
meter dives with Steve Neff
finishing third in the 1 meter
and fourth in the 3 meter.
Earey felt the meet "was
under control when we won
the Medley relay."
The anticipated strength of
Maryland's Dave Heim in the
1000 and 500 freestyle gave
the Terps 2 of their 5 victories.
Gary Coodner of Maryland
upset Dave Ball in the 200
freestyle and Richard Williams
was upset by Accornero in the
200 b re astro k.
Doug Behrman continued
his comeback from a broken
arm with two excellent legs on
both relays.
Modestly Behrman said,

In Liberty Bowl,
MEMPHIS, Tenn.
(UPI)-The Mississippi Rebels,
trailing by two touchdowns in
the first two minutes, came
from behind on a 79-yard run
by Steve Hindman in the
opening seconds of the third
period Saturday and went on
to beat Virginia Tech 34-17 in
the tenth annual Liberty Bowl.
The Rebels had battled
from n 17.fi deficit to within
three points, 17-14, at half time
on two second period
touchdown passes by
sophomore quarterback Archie
Manning.
Then, on the first play after
the second half kickoff,
Hindman, a senior tailback,
swept his right end behind
perfect blocking and scored to
put Ole Miss into the lead.

monster man Robert Bailey
intercepted an Al Kincaid pass
and raced 70 yards for a
touchdown, a Liberty Bowl
record for a pass interception

Mississippi, appearing in a
bowl game for the 12th
consecutive year, then, in the
final period, tacked on field
goals of 43 and 46 yards by
Van Brown, who also kicked
the Rebs' four conversions.
Virginia Rech messed up an
onsides kickoff attempt after
Bulldogs, spearheaded by 7-2
center Artis Gilmore's
omnipotent 37-point show,
penned a 93-80 victory over
the Carolina freshman squad,
which suffered its first setback
of the season.
The Bulldogs showed the
Chapel Hillians what it's really
in the conference, shooting
from almost anywhere on the
court. He is averaging more
than 18 points a game this
season after topping the ACC
last year with a 23.0 average.
zatezalo, wno took more
shots than the next two players
on the squad last season, hit
only 36.7 percent from the
field.
But a tougher starting corps
has reduced Zatezalo' s
sometimes poor shooting
attempts, and this year's
Clemson team has more
balance than the 1967-38 team

Freshmen Chambers and
Bedell added two victories to
Carolina's list. Chambers won
the 200 individual medley and
Bedell the 200 butterfly.

A very good center for his
size, 6-7 Richie Mahaffey, gives
the Tigers scoring power inside.
But Mahaffey is the tallest man
on the team, and Clemson will
probably get killed on the
boards by the tall Tar Heels.
Tiger forwards are small.
Returning starter Trip Jones,
6-5, averaged 9.9 points a game
last year but got only 72
rebounds in 24 games. Junior
college transfer Ronnie Yates
broke into the lineup with
good pre-season play, but he's
just 6-4.

Georgia Tech in its opener and
then losing 86-85 to Pete
Maravich and Louisiana State
at home.
Carolina, which hasn't
played since last Monday, will
open ACC play with a 4-0
record.
Coach Dean Smith talks
about a better balanced
Clemson and the scoring of
Zatezalo, but he knows his
rebounders will make the
boards' battle a farce.
And as against Oregon,
Kentucky and Vandy, that
means a Tar Heel victory.
