Carolina opened with its four corners offense, a tactic which despite its frequent use still confuses opponents. The return of 6-8 Donn Johnston to the Tar Baby line-up and the deadly shooting of Norris Crigler sent - the Carolina quintet to a 10-3 lead five minutes into the first half. The battle swayed back and forth between the two combatants from that point until the halftime buzzer, with Duke barely on top at intermission 26-25. The second half saw the slowdown tactics used to their fullest extent. Carolina controlled the second half tap and immediately settled into the four corners.
