in with its
a sculptural
exhibit in front of the Carolina
Union is concerned with man
in his natural environment. The
exhibit is a part of the Carolina
Symposium.
The artist, Mayo Mac Boggs,
a graduate fellow in the Art
Department, said that the
pieces form a theme of
continuity.
"The metal sculptures blend
In with the trees and become a
part of the natural
environment," he said.
Conversely, he added, the trees
themselves become a part of
the whole theme of the
exhibit. Each enhances the
other. .
Boggs, who taught sculpture
last semester, now instructs
gxts and crafts. An art graduate
of the University of Kentucky,
he said he came to North
Carolina because of its natural
environment.
He pointed out that the
color of the pieces, a light
green, blends with the color of
the plants and changes slightly
as the season changes.

UNC is attempting to
increase the manpower
resources of North Carolina by
retraining 21 former maids,
clerks and cafeteria workers.
By September these
employees will be laboratory
assistants if they pass the
course they are now taking at
the UNC School of Medicine.
Their curriculum . includes
both academic and technical
courses; arithmetic, chemistry,
biology, laboratory procedures
and the use of complicated
equipment.
The program is funded by
the Medical School, the
University of North Carolina,
and the U.S. Labor
Department's New Careers
program through Operation
Breakthrough.
All UNC funding is from
non-State sources.
Dr. Edward Glass man, a
professor of biochemistry, who
is responsible for the course,
points out that the course
should be considered an
investment in North Carolina
resources. One difficulty of
attracting high-wage industry
to this area is the lack of
skilled workers.
"Unfortunately, skilled
labor does not move into an
area lacking suitable industry,"
he said.
For this reason, this
Technical Training Program for
21 former clerks, maids and
cafeteria workers is considered
a partial solution to this
problem.
