' It's a slow process, but the word is
getting round. A few people have
wandered into Hill Hall on a Wednesday
""night; a few more have seen them at
Morrison or Cobb; but most of the
students have barely heard of, and far less
seen, the U.N.C. Jazz Lab Band.
Which is a pity, because they are really
missing something. There is real talent in
that band, and it is becoming more and
more apparent every time they play.
Sometimes they surprise even themselves
with the unknown capabilities that come
out. (Ask any one of them about Don
Dixon singing "It's Your Thing," for
instance) The reasons for this
improvement are twofold; many of the
musicians have been in the band since it
started, and are simply becoming more
experienced; and the different sections
(trumpets, trombones, saxes, and
rhythm) have been getting together on
their own and running down the charts.
What the band needs now is publicity
and jobs. If you haven't already heard
them, come and listen any Monday at
five, or Wednesday at seven-thirty, in Hill
Hall. The Jazz Lab is available for dances
and concerts anywhere; frathouses,
residence-halls, private parties. And on
Tuesday March 9th, the band is
perfoming in Hill Hall Auditorium as part
of the Music Department's Tuesday
Evening Series. Be there.
