The Arab-Israeli cease-fire, which stopped the shooting in the Middle East seven months ago, expired at midnight (5 P.M, EST) Sunday. Both sides had placed their armed forces on emergency war alerts but indicated there would be no immediate resumption of hostilities. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat announced a few hours earlier that he would not agree to another extension of the truce in view of Israel's refusal to pledge complete withdrawal from all Arab territories occupied in the 1967 Nixon 'optimistic on renewing truce WASHINGTON-President Nixon said Sunday the United States and Russia are exerting "a restraining effort" on the Arabs and Israelis and he does not expect either side "to break the cease fire" in the Middle East. In an exclusive telephone interview which he initiated, Nixon told a UPI reporter "neither side will gain and both will lose" with a resumption of hostilities. "I don't see it coming by determination," he added. The President said he has been talking to Secretary of State William P. Rogers and Dr. Henry A. The cease-fire originally went into effect last Aug. 7 following an appeal from U.S. Secretary of State William P. Rogers to both sides to "stop shooting and start talking." It was extended another 30 days by Egypt last month but Sadat warned then he would reject another extension unless concrete progress was made at the U.N.-supervised talks in New York- The talks under U.N. mediator Gunnar developments. "We're working on it all the time," he explained. "I am cautiously optimistic on getting a cease-fire," he said. "No one .would gain. We're going to have ups and downs in the next week or two with the rhetoric heating up. Both of the major powers will exert a restraining effort. "I'm looking at it from the standpoint of realities out there." He said the question now is "will one side or the other break the cease fire?" "Breaking up the peace would not be in the interest of either. We can expect some days of tension and difficulty, but there are great forces at work for a live-and-let-live attitude," Nixon said. Jarring have bogged down over Israel's refusal to commit itself to any troop withdrawal in advance of peace negotiations and the establishment of "secure, recognized and guaranteed borders." There was no immediate announcement from Jordan. Sadat, in announcing his decision, said it had been taken following secret consultations in Moscow with top Soviet leaders. He said he also had been in contact with U.S. officials who "had a complete, frank and clear picture of our attitude." The Egyptian president, in a 28-minute radio and television address to the nation from Cairo, said the end to the . cease-fire does not mean that hostilities would be resumed at the stroke of midnight. Both Arab and Israeli forces guarding the cease-fire lines already were reported on battle footing. But all was reported quiet along the Egyptian, Jordanian, Syrian and I ebanese fronts. Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban, in an interview over Israel State radio following Sadat's no-cease-fire extension announcement, said Israel "will maintain the cease-fire on a reciprocal basis as long as no shots are fired at us-we shall not initiate shooting." A "Voice of Israel" commentator warned later, however, that "a situation has been created along the Suez Canal where any incident, however small, can lead to a conflagration." . - -r 1 i Hate To Get Uppity...But $5.98 LP's for only ONL ELSE BUT AT THE FRIENDLY Record & Tape Center 7 i: I crazier., A frffie bouii 1 NEW YORK-Muhammed Ali, a trifle slower at 29, and Joe Frazier, who may be fighting for the last time, meet Monday night for the world heavyweight title in boxing's richest bout. Ali was in exile 43 months prior to his comeback against Jerry Quarry and Oscar Bonavena. He beat both. Frazier, daring the interim, made his reputation with an undefeated career. He beat Buster Mathis to become world champion in seven U.S. states and knocked out World Boxing Association titleholder Jimmy Ellis in the fourth round to gain the distinction as undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. ft it 4 , ; I yV(3L . v L 10SS IT flU FOR L0080E00 ii A.r.i.-2 p.r.i. Tel. 929-1145 tor oarae SAIGON South Vietnamese troops, jubOar.t over their capture of Sepone, dug in Sunday for what their commanders said could be the "big fight" with as many as 50,000 North Vietnamese thrown in to recapture the Ho Chi Mmh Trail network in Laos. Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Lam, commnder of South Vietnamese fora-s in Laos, said the taking of Sepone Saturday completed the major mission President Nguyen Van Thieu gave him in smashing Communist supply lines. Sepone, 27 miles inside Laos, was an important junction on the Ho Chi Miah Trail used by the North Vietnamese Ln getting supplies, ammunition and men to the South. "If we stay here long enough the North Vietnamese will be able to bring Ln large units and we will have a big fkht here," Lt. Col. Ngo Van Chung told UPI correspondent Barney Seibert at an artillery base overlooking Sepone. Elements of six North Vietnamese divisions-there are 12,000 men in one NVA division -have been identified in areas being occupied by South Vietnamese forces, Lam said at Khe Sanh. The general said he believed at least 50,000 Communist troops were now in the trail network area and "are reinforcing." TOE COr.ilHG fJEELI! Din i j 4 F.F.I.
