The Daily Tar Heel Monday, March 15, 1971 t Smith gets District District 3 hotio Dean Smith named Coach of the Year ia the NCAA phtfift ti?? pttjrfs foyUsmjw, Chris Cobbs i n o n n o v. v jinn iijiiiis)!; 4w c5 ' The ACC tournament is an abominable event. ; It disrupts the community of men such as it is-living along a quarter of the Eastern seaboard. It allows them to indulge their success-oriented dreams for a day or two or three and leaves them spent, disillusioned and bitter. Adults-as culture insists they be called-scream, fight, get drunk and cry over its outcome. A lot of money goes into it, too. This was the second straight season it deprived a team that had done all that was asked of it and maybe more than was demanded of other teams in fhe country, of its just deserts, the Eastern Regionals. Frank McGuire said it. His players said it. Carolina should be in the Regionals. Instead McGuire is there. He wasn't last year. Because of the tournament. This is a wonderful instrument for torture, this tournament. It is inane. Why play 14 conference games for nothing? Let's be pragmatic, our duty as Americans. Nobody else has anything like the tournament. Nobody else insists on such a self destructive exercise. The tournament's a rotten idea. Men practically hate each other because of it. South Carolina's champions may be the most detested in ACC history. The tournament has had a lot to do with that. John Roche is a victim of the tournament, of its passions. Vhv else would he "use his favorite (four letter) expression" to Dean Smith after the finale? We've created a monster in the tournament. It gave State new life, another chance last year, I'm reminded. This is sacred? What about out-classed Clemson? Why should it be forced to flaunt its lack of talent before 15,000 curiosity seekers? What about Wake Forest and Virginia? Why demand one more butt-busting sudden-death-risking effort? , What about Duke? What is there now for Bucky .UTS' self pronounced team of destiny? And what about Carolina? A season gathers an awful weight and-we have the tournament to thank lasts six seconds too long. J. Wi TL wM - . - f i . uw in . I Ik. V UNC's star forward Dennis Wuycik finally burst into his regular season form against South Carolina Saturday night, but even this driving bucket over the goal-tending arm of USC center Tom Owens wasn't enough to make up for the cold night the team had at the foul line. The hosting Quakers of Penn won the Eastern championship, finishing ahead of runner-up Princeton and defending champion Yale. Senior co-captain Rich Williams set a new school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:02.1 time, while Gerry Chapman erased the old UNC 1650-yard freestyle mark with a 17:20.4 showing. , Bruins batter Southern Cal Top ranked UCLA, using a vicious V man for man defense, held Southern California without a field goal for the first four and a half minutes Saturday and . the Bruins went on to win 73-62. ;f,v UCLA thus filled the only open NCAA playoff berth by winning the Pacific 8 Conference championship. The Bruins ran off to an early 12-3 lead as Curtis Rowe hit two key shots and Kenny Booker stole two Trojan passes to set up fast breaks. Joe Mackey connected for USC's first field goal of the game but the Bruin lead swelled to 28-13 as Rowe neutralized USC center Ron Riley and controlled the boards. Bob Nagle, who finished third in the 200-yard butterfly consolation at :58.5, qualified for the NCAA swimming championships. Other Tar Heels scorers in the individual events included Chapman, who was runner-up in the 400-yard individual medley consolation, and Phil McMunigal, who finished fourth and sixth in the 100-and 200-yard backstroke consolations, respectively. All three Carolina relay teams finished ninth overall, but the 800-yard freestyle relay (Nagle, Chapman, McMunigal, and Dave Bedell) definitely qualified for the NCAA's, while the 400-yard medley relay (McMunigal, Williams, Bedell, and Bruce Wigo) probably did. The Tar Heels will be off for the next ten days, until the start of the NCAA's March 25 in Ames, Iowa. In addition to Nagle and the two relays that qualified in Philadelphia, four other Carolina swimmers will be going to the nationals: Bedell and Jim Osborn (200-yard butterfly), Jike Southard (500-yard freestyle) and George Schiaffino (50-yard freestyle). 1 I i V The finish was close, and for uv, the one-point loss to South Carolina was hard to take. Junior forward Bill Chamberlain who had an impressive first half on the boards collapsed in tears on the bench after the game.
