Sports Editor Fans throughout the country today will show up early for four regional consolation games to see the best teams in the country play for third place. South Carolina, Notre Dame, Marquette, Kentucky and Fordham will all be competing early after one of the most shocking series of upsets in NCAA history. Villanova topped Fordham 85-75 in Raleigh's Eastern Regionals before South Carolina fell to Penn, but what happened in the famed basketball shrine of Athens, Ga. was even more unusual. Marquette went down to tournament-wise Ohio State 60-59 and Western Kentucky ran Kentucky back to Churchill Downs 107-83. In Wichita, Austin Can and Notre Dame fought into overtime, but lost to Missouri Valley champ Drake 79-72. Drake will play Kansas in the Midwest finals today after the Jayhawks survived Houston 78-77. i UCLA plays Long Beach State today in the Western finals in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Bruins tripped Brigham Young 91-73 and Long Beach usurped a 15-point deficit to beat Pacific 78-65. Allen Hornyak sank two foul shots with six seconds left to beat Marquette 6f59 after Dean Meminger fouled out. For Al McGuire, the Warrior mentor who was named AP Coach of the Year, the words of a week ago tasted sour. v.. The Carolina junior varsity baseball team dropped its season opener to Sandhills 6-4 Thursday in what was only the third appearance for the Tar Heels on a regulation field this spring. Due to construction of a new stadium on campus the team has been forced to practice with the varsity or at Navy Field. Coach Dick Prindle expressed satisfaction with his team's showing under the circumstances. He sends the squad against Wingate Junior College today. Stupid question, but McGuire answered, "No, itH be a big game for them." As it turned out, he was right. Jim Cleamons limited Meminger to 1 1 points and scored 21 himself. Center Luke Witte helped out with 13. Western Kentucky bolted to a 24-12 lead and trounced its in-state rival with Jim McDaniels contributing 35 and Jim Rose 25f The Wildcats, despite 23 points from Tom Parker, never threatened. "If we play much better than this, well be in the NBA," said WK Coach Johnny Oldham. He should make it to Houston, but the Buckeyes don't lose in Mideast Regionals under Fred Taylor and may be ready for another Bluegrasg ambush. Three years ago, Bill Hosket and OSU stunned Kentucky in the Mideast finals and played North Carolina in the NCAA finals. Al Sakys matched Austin Carr's bucket at the end of regulation time and then . put Drake ahead in the first 30 seconds of overtime to upset the Irish. Houston's Poo Welch emulated Carr and tried to sink Kansas by himself, but it didn't work. The Jayhawks prevailed 78-77 and now face Drake today, a team that seems to get better performance per man than just about any team in the country. pitcher Tim Zanner surrendered two runs on three hits in the first inning before" settling down to work four scoreless frames. - .' Carolina scored in the third on a walk with the bases loaded and an inning later first baseman Bob Hinson blasted a 360-foot home run, good for two RBI's and giving UNC the lead at 3-2. . Sandhills picked up four runs in the seventh to nail down the victory.' Shortstop Bobby Guthrie added a couple of hits and some fine fielding plays j for Carolina along the way. .m.'.-;. r.-; .' For the second straight year, people around the ACC are wondering what would have happened if the regular season winner had gotten its rightful place in the Eastern Regionals. Certainly it wouldn't have stayed in a zone, watching Pennsylvania throw up those 20-foot howitzers that seemingly found the basket every time. Of course it wouldn't have let one guard handle the ball most of the time on every play, passing up the quick feed to the big man and chaining that guard to the defensive abilities of 6-7 Corky Calhoun. South Carolina made these tactical errors against the Quakers Thursday night in Raleigh and lost 79-64. They go back to Columbia after today's consolation game with Fordham and. watch the rest of the NCAA tournament on television. In fairness to the Gamecocks, any team would have had trouble stopping Penn's outside shooting in the first half. Bob Morse and Dave Wohl simply could not miss; Morse, at 6-8, got 28 points and Wohl 20. What about those scouting reports that told Frank McGuire that Penn was disciplined, waiting for the good shot? He had to throw them away after the first -ten minutes. - ' Of course, there was an element of patterned r offense there. State, skip over to Durham today at 2:00 to battle Duke in the Blue Devils opening game. Rabb was a little concerned with Carolina's hitting prior to the State contest, and the Tar Heels gathered in their seven runs against the Wolfpack on only four hits. One of the four hits, however, was a three-run homer by . left-fielder Jack Gillis, and his clout proved to be the difference in the ballgame. It's still early, of course, and the Tar Heels haven't had enough exposure yet to breaking pitches, which came at them in "It's the end," go to Houston, occurred. ml NOW SHOWING fL.I..H.H.lll) ..UP" 1 IgpJM .. Rabb expect hitting improvement and he thinks the answer lies in plenty of batting practice. The Tar Heels won't be able to practice on campus until Cary Boshamer Stadium is completed sometime in April, so they have to be content right now to travel to Durham to hold practice every day. "We're a little disappointed that we didn't get more hits against State," Rabb says, "but we anticipated some problems with Lewis' curve ball. Still, our hitting is progressing very satisfactorily at this early stage of the season." The Tar Heels were guilty of four Still, South Carolina pounded Penn to pieces on the boards in the first half and held the halftime lead, 37-36. Penn, of course, was going to cool off and the Gamecocks would continue their "funky chicken' to Houston. But what happened on the other end of the court was more important. Roche was shackled by the incredibly quick Calhoun, hitting only five of 18 floor shots. Tom Riker went three for 15; the team shot 34.8 per cent. Penn only hit 41.3 because five easy shots by Morse and Bob Wolf failed to drop under the basket, but 6-10 soph Phil Hankinson and Wolf halted Tom Owens and Riker and got the key rebounds. A tearful Roche said he wished "we could just pack our bags and go home" after the game. said Roche. "We thought we could - but there's not a chance." In short, Frank McGuire got outcoached and John Roche got outplayed. Junior rishthauder Greg Pavlick went five Liaises and left vrith a Tar Heel lead, while freshnan lefthander Jin Chamberlain finished up with four smcx)th innings of relief work. "Pavlick and ChariberLiin both looked good," claims Ribb, "and I'm very pleased right now with our entire pitching staff. Our defense, although we did make the four errors, is adequate for this point of the year. "The errors that we made were of an unusual nature and a couple of them came on bad bounces." Things generally seem to be progressing well in the Tar Heel camp and optimism is running high following the opening victory. With the pitching looking fine, as was expected, and with the prospects good for a tight defense and few more fireworks at the plate, Rabb is naturally anxious to see how his Tar Heels perform against Duke. "The boys have a wonderful attitude," he says. "Over-all, I'm very satisfied with the way we looked in our first game. We're looking forward to playing Duke." Duke, coached by former St. Louis Cardinal outfielder Enos "Country" Slaughter, lost a couple of starters off last year's squad to graduation, but they've been adequately replaced and the Blue Devils appear to be set. They're going up against competition for the first time this year today, so it remains to be seen whether Slaughter, a dangerous hitter and a gritty hustler as a player, can instill these same qualities in his personnel. Jim Rhodes, a right-handed junior from Wilmington who labored in a relief role last season, will open on the mound for the Tar Heels today. Since it's his first assignment of the young season, Rhodes will probably throw for only four or five innings.
