The way the warriors have been falling recently, however, it looks more like "a thousand casts." On Monday, 21 players were missing from practice because of various infirmities, 12 with injuries incurred during this spring session. Heel. lose But Cinderella team still contends for title I - . Spooner had high hopes for rising junior tight end Ken Taylor. "He was having one of the best springs ever," says Spooner, "really hustling and developing." Then Ken broke a bone in, his leg, scratching him from any more play this spring. , The other experienced tight end, John Co well, is suffering from a "hip pointer" at the moment, but should be ready for Saturday's Blue-White game. Spooner needs a third tight end to back Cowell and Taylor when both are blocking for short-yardage situations. 98 and second-place Virginia earlier in the week, Carolina accumulated 17 hits before being edged out by league-leading Maryland 9-8 Sunday. For the weekend, against the league's two leading teams Carolina battered opposing pitchers for a total of 34 hits. In Sunday's shovdown with the Terrapins, three of the Tar Heels, Mike Roberts, Jack Gillis, and Bobby Elliot, shared leading hit honors with three apiece. Hard-hitting freshman Bobby Guthrie, recently brought up from the freshman squad, continued to impress everyone by rapping out two hits in four times at bat. Veterans Larry Kiser and John Wilson also contributed two hits apiece. The game was a see-saw battle in the beginning with the two rival teams each trading runs in the first two innings. In the third, however, the defending champion Terps put together a four run rally to take the lead for good. The leading hitters for Maryland were first baseman Jim Norris and centerfielder Gene Collins who both had three hits in four times at bat. The outstanding performance of the day was turned in by Terp fireman Bob Grossman who came on in the seventh inning to cool off the hot Tar Heel bats. Bobby Johnson, a linebacker on the freshman team last season, has also been installed. The coaches were hoping that rising soph Steele Alphin would be able to move up, but a leg injury has kept him from working. Scott Reynolds is another promising newcomer knocked out by injuries; a shoulder ailment prevents the coaches from getting a better look at him. "I think that no other team anywhere had a better set of tight ends than we did first six innings, Carolina could only manage one hit in the three innings Grossman worked. The Heels will have a chance to revenge their loss against Maryland this Wednesday but first they have to take on a strong Virginia team today. It could be a very tough week for Coach Rabb's charges with both games being on the road. Virginia recovered well from their Carolina oetters shut out by Bruce Gurganus Sports Writer Saturday afternoon on the Varsity Courts there was a replay of the age-old race between the tortoise and the "Heel." There was a slight change this time in that Coach Don Skakle's Heel netters raced to another 9-0 win, this time over the Maryland Terrapins. Skakle's tenacious Tar Heel tennis team took their 1 5th win of the season against only two defeats. The squad will travel across the mountains to Knoxville, Tennessee this weekend to compete in the Tennessee Classic. Other teams in the tourney are Tennessee, Southern Illinois, and powerful Georgia. At 6-6, Jim Steele has the physical tools for stardom at tight end, provided that work with the weight machine pays off. Spooner is giving this rising sophomore a longer look. Split end, vacated by Ricky Lanier who was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, may not be so hard to fill after all. The coaches like the chances of Earl Bethea, a Saturday loss to Carolina by coming back on Sunday to give State their fourth conference loss of the season. However, their one loss dropped the Cavaliers from second to fourth in the conference with a 3-2 record. For Maryland, their victory Sunday upped their conference record to 4-1 . The Terps held on to first place in the race despite the face they dropped their first conference game to State Saturday. Leading the way for Carolina was All-American sensation Freddie McNair. The Maryland native continues to be the man to beat in the Atlantic Coast Conference. McNair handed Gene Speni a 7-5, 6-2 defeat on the first court. On the second court Jimmy Corn ran his season record to 16-1. The consistent junior took Neil Patterson by scores of 6-2 and 6-0. Along with McNair, Corn is certain to be top-seeded in his flight when tournament time comes. Forrest Simmons, playing at number three, won another marathon three setter. Simmons slid past Gary Silverman by 6-4, 5-7, and 6-2 scores. The NCAA has prohibited a crackback below the waist, but this won't be a problem since Spooner has always taught the ends to aim for the rib cage anyway. Earl Chesson, brother of Duke wide receiver Wes, led the Tar Babies in receiving with 1 2 in five games. However, back problems have set him back recently. The other candidate for split end is non-scholarship sophomore Pat Norton, who caught five passes as a freshman. Carolina crew is beaten by one length in meet by Andrew Adler Special to the DTH .. The unbelievable freshman has yet to lose a match, or even a set for that matter, as a Tar Heel. Another of Skakle's freshman jewels, Richard Hardaway, stretched his season record to 15-1 with a fine 6-1 and 6-2 win over the Terrapins's Wesner. Fast finishing Mike Kernodle continued to blast his opponents at number six. Kernodle polished off Yunger 6-1 and 6-0. In the doubles action the three Tar Heel tandems swept by all of the Maryland twosomes in straight sets.
