Thursday, April 29, 7971 u eis woiriMff on imew soimisi'ooEi T1 r1 TT 9 lb)einice to mauise op nor ioe The Daily Tar Heel by Mark Whicker V Sports Editor Offensive coach Bobby Collins is testing a novel equation in his quest to build another powerful Tar Heel running attack this fall. He's confident that 33 plus 24 plus 40 can equal 23-a more "balanced" equation than the single-member version of last season. f,Of course, that 23 built some records that haven't been equalled by anybody. "I think Don McCauley, without a doubt, was the best third-and-short runner in the country last year," says Collins. "On our highlight films, we show Don breaking off some longer runs-he could eight-yard and ten-yard you to death-but wp think some of his better performances wjere on short yardage, goal line situations." The leading single-season rusher in college football history will not be "replaced", but the coaches believe that Carolina's running can be iust as good with numbers 24, (tailback Ike Oglesby), 33 (fullback Geoff Hamlin), and 40 (wingback Lewis Jolley). In front of these three is the formidable no. 12, quarterback Paul Miller, whose bootleg touchdown against Duke was one of the classic moments of the 8-4 season. Neither Oglesby nor Miller will participate in the Blue-White game Saturday. Oglesby suffered a broken hand while running backfield drills for a high school coaches clinic. Miller has back spasms again, but both should be ready to go in September. Oglesby was Carolina's second leading runner last year, going for 562 yards and six touchdowns. His speed makes him more threatening on long gainers than McCauley was, but Collins is hoping that Ike will be just as dependable on third and two. Senior Bill Sigler, McCauley's understudy two years ago, and hard-running redshirt Billy Hite are both working at tailback, with Hite filling in at fullback as well. Rising sophomores Mike Shuster and Phil Daly are not big, but run eagerly and provide more than enough tailback depth Collins emphasizes that both Hamlin and Jolley will run more this fall. "Well still be a tailback offense for the most part, but both Geoff and Lew have been running very well in spring practice and well use them more for that purpose." Fullback is one of the more solid positions on the team. Hamlin's blocking was instrumental in McCauley's 21 touchdowns and he gained 195 yards on 55 bursts up the middle. Not once did he lose ground. Jolley, one of the faster Tar Heels, ran for 176 yards and caught 20 passes for fivr touchdowns. "He seemed to miss the easy ones and catch the hard ones," Collins observes. "He realizes that it's all a matter of concentration." Sigler and rising sophs Ted Levrenz -and Charlie Sink are running behind 1 Jolley. Levrenz, a high school quarterback and a defensive end with the Tar Babies, has good hands. Tim Kirkpatrick returns for another year behind Hamlin, and his consistent play has impressed Collins this spring. Paul Miller's health is a constant worry, since both Mike Mansfield and Chris Lee have been moved to other positions. Miller completed 60 per cent of his passes last season for 728 yards and eight touchdowns, and ran for an additional 171. The cool rising senior was knocked out of commission while throwing a touchdown pass to Tony Blanchard in the Peach Bow 1 game. Administering the blow was Arizona State's Junior Ah Youx, and whether the tackle was a "cheap shot" or not has been the source of much conjecture. Miller's fine passing was forgotten after his famous bootleg coup in the Duke game. On the .one-yard line, and with everyone from Ayden to Garden City looking for number 23 again, Miller concealed the ball, made the fake, and could have crawled to the end zone. The play broke Duke's back and the ;Tar Heels went on the win 59-34. 97t TODAY-4: 30-7:3097f BEEF-ON BUN $.97 974 Back of the Zoom 97 rr r 5 I CAP St GOWN RENTAL DEADLINE - MAY 1st PLACE YOUR ORDER NOW Student Stores "On Campus" 9VSP I mmmm u f. unnnuc : & s -..
