Chapel Hill and Carrboro will vote today on a tax subsidy for the public transportation system. The referendum would authorize the town boards to levy up to eight cents tax .per $100 assessed cm property evaluation and to appropriate other public funds for partial support of a bus system. - Mayor Howard Lee and all except one of Chapel Hill's six aldermen hare endorsed the subsidy. Alderman George Coxhead, Transportation Commission representative, announced last week he is opposed to the subsidy. All of -the Carrboro candidates participating in a public forum last Thursday night opposed the bus subsidy. The boards decided to fund the bus system to- give the voters a chance to test it. Operation of the bus system ended Friday night when funds dwindled to less than enough to cover a full day of operation.. Bus riders had increased last week, following a reduction in fares from 25 cents to 15 cents. The total number of riders last Thursday was 522, the highest daily total and 40 per cent more than the week before. By reducing the fare the Commission wanted to show citizens that they had serious effort to insure the bus system's success. '' Two major changes were made in tie. bus system by the commission during the four weeks of operation. The Merritt Mm Road-Colonial Heights bus routes were changed to include service to the apartments on the 54-Bypass and the Lincoln Park area and the Saturday operation schedule was changed to run "buses from 7:45 a,m. to 5:15 p.m. with only a 30-minute break in mid-day service. The present contract with the Rakish company is at charter rates, Lathiop slid. The Raleigh company wzs chosen because it offered a contract with a 30-day cancellation clause. If a favorable subsidy and an assurance of a years operation are voted in today, Lathrop said a lower cost contract would be negotiated. Regardless to the outcome of the referendum, the towns are planning to do a study of transportation needs. The towns have applied for a $29,000 feasibility study grant from the Urban Mass Transit Authority, a division of the Department of Transportation. The grant is expected to be approved early this month. If the referendum passes, the bus system will serve as a model for the study. v.
