The Daily Tar Heel Tennis team ends i f it lajiM! J , 3 $ f :Liiut?i season by defeatin Hi iJiLr! r I f Blue Devils, 9-0 7 -2 r Saturday, May 8, 1971 S u by Bruce Gurganus Sports Writer Closing out the regular season here yesterday, Coach Don Skakle's Big Blue Machine ran its record to 21-2 for the year. The Tar Heels, who have been invincible at home, blasted Duke 9-0 finishing with a conference record of 6-1 heading into the ACC tournament next, weekend at South Carolina. Senior Mike Kernodle, playing at number six, closed out his Chapel Hill career with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Blue Devils' Pete Frank. Kernodle's record this season was an impressive 20-3. The only other senior on the roster is Billy Mears, who was undefeated in limited action this year. On the first court All-American Freddie McNair wrapped up the top seed in the conference tourney by beating Heels play VPI today Thursday afternoon's non-conference game between Carolina and Wake Forest was rained out in the third inning. At the time of the decision to call the game Carolina was winning 2-1. The game, however, will not be rescheduled due to the fact it was non-conference and will not figure in the conference standings. The Heels battled Duke last night in the Durham Athletic Park and are scheduled to play Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon. The game will be played at the Durham Athletic Park and students will be admitted free with an athletic pass and aUNCI.D. 85 TODAY-4: SPANISH MEAT LOAF $.85 THE BACCHAE 85? McNair completed his sophomore year 19-3 overall and 6-0 in the ACC. At number two Jimmy Corn was back on the winning way with an unbelievably easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Charles Benedict. Like McNair, Corn will have the top seeding in his flight as he too went unbeaten in the conference this year and -19-4 overall. Hard hitter Forrest Simmons got back into the winners' circle with a 6-2, 6-3 thrashing of John Lerch. Simmons' season mark was 18-5 with a 5-2 conference mark which should be good for second or third seed in his flight. . -The most fantastic success story of all was written this season by a newcomer in the Tar Heel line-up. Freshman star Richard McKee is now the only undefeated regular in the conference. His 6-0, 6-1 win over, John Buckley gave him a 23-0 record for the year with a 7-0 ACC ledger and needless to say the top seed in his fourth flight. Playing beside McKee all season long has been the Tar Heel with the second best record on the team and also a freshman. Lithe Richard Hardaway shutout Jeff Appelbaum yesterday, 6-0, 6-0 to finish the season at 20-1. His only . loss came in the loss to Clemson at the hands of Safraz Rahim. The possibility of revenge in the tourney looks hopeful. All three of Skakle's doubles tandems took straight set wins over the Duke duos. McNair and McKee completed the year unbeaten and should be favored to bring home the top doubles honors which McNair and Joe Dorn won a year ago. . , As expected the tournament will boil 1 down to a two team battle between UNC and Clemson for the conference title. - . 30-7:30 85$ 85? The game marks the end of the Tar Heels' 1971 home season. UMBC took a 7-4 record into its game against Washington & Lee last Wednesday. Three of their losses came at the hands of Duke, Towson State and the University of Baltimore, while most of their wins came against smaller schools in the area. Like UMBC, Carolina was defeated earlier in the season by Towson . State, by an 11-6 margin. In his team's first 1 1 games this season, attackman Jeff Thomas has scored 29 goals and added 56 assists to lead the country in total points. Most of Thomas' feeds have gone to teammate Jim- Fry, who has 50 goals and four assists to bis credit for the season. ? Carolina's All-American defenseman Paul Truesdell has drawn the assignment ofj defending against Thomas, while John Hamachek goes against Fry. isThe Tar Heels will start their usual line-up, with the possible exception of senior attackman Ray Seipp. The team's leading scorer, Seipp has been suffering from a bruised left elbow. 5-9 pm 3i. ..v.j::r.... Treasury Secretary John B. Con nail y issued a license allowing VS. businessmen and banks to transact business with the Communist government and its citizens using dollars or dollar instruments. Previously there had been a complete prohibition against such transactions. "This is the Treasury's first step in implementing President Nixon's decision on April 14 to relax financial and commercial controls with respect to mainland China," a Treasury statement said. "Treasury is now consulting with the Departments of State and Commerce and other interested agencies on relaxing controls on imports of goods from China." . Treasury officials emphasized Connally's order was limited to dollar transactions, and in itself did not remove prohibitions against exporting or importing goods to or from Communist China. But the statement made it clear that removing or relaxing those controls was being contemplated. U.S. to destroy germ warfare WASHINGTON Destruction will begin Monday of American supplies of germ warfare weapons at an arsenal in Arkansas, the Defense Department announced. The action is in accordance with an order issued by President Nixon Nov. 25, 1969, for total destruction of all U.S. offensive gefm weapons. When all biological and toxin agents have been destroyed at Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas, the facility will be turned over to the Food and Drug Administration for use as the national center for toxicological research, the Pentagon said. All germ weapons for use against people are at Pine Bluff. Anticrop weapons are stored at Fort Detrick, Md., near Baltimore; at Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Denver, Colo., and at Beale Air Force Base, Marysville, Calif. Rogers flew within sight of occupied Arab territory and met with Israel's leaders Friday in a final face-to-face push for a relaxed Israeli position on withdrawing from terrain captured in the 1967 Middle East war. After a brief aerial tour near Israeli-held Sharm El Sheikh at the Strait of Tiran on the southern tip of the captured Sinai Peninsula, Rogers said he had "a much .better idea of the whole problem. "I have a better understanding of the area. Any time you. see something personally you have a better idea of the whole problem. Certainly from the standpoint of the terrain I have a much better idea," he said. Rogers' second and final meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir and her top cabinet aides began in her ivy -covered, Tel Aviv office. Israel has argued most of the territory she is occupying is needed as a buffer against possible future Arab intrusions if there is no final peace settlement. In Cairo, the semiofficial newspaper Al Ahra said Egyptian President Anwar Sadat told Rogers Thursday Egypt rejects any makeshift solution to solve the Middle East crisis and insists on an over-all settlement.
