Wolfe contest winners
to be announced today
The winners of the Thomas Wolfe
Creative Writing Contest will be
announced tonight ai: a cocktail parry at
Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, sponsor of the
contest.
Prizes will be presented to the winners
at the party, which begins at 5 p.m. First
prize is SI 00; second prize, S35 from the
Intimate Bookshop; third prize, $20 from
Town and Campus and Wentworth and
Sloan; and fourth prize, $5 from Julian's.
The contest was upon to all
undergraduate and graduate students at
the University. The entries were judged
by members of the UNC English
department.
Ice cream social set
for The Pit Thursday
The Music and Social Committees of
the Carolina Union Activities Group will
sponsor an ice cream social in the Pit
Thursday 4-8 p.m. ,
The price will be 10 cents for all the
ice cream you can 4 eat. The Union will
provide 120 gallons of vanilla ice cream
plus chocolate syrup, butterscotch
topping, cherries, nuts and strawberries.
Peter Ingram's Dixieland Band will
entertain from 5:30 to 7:30 in the midst
of an 1 890's atmosphere.
Celebration of summer
slated for Thursday
A celebration in honor of the
impending summer, featuring food and
- music, will be staged Thursday night in'
the Ramshead Parking Lot.
The celebration, sponsored jointly by
Scott Residence College, Alderman,
Kenan, Morrison, Ehringhaus and
Granville dorms, will provide free food
from 6:30-8 p.m. The music will be by
the Okaysions from 8-12 p.m.

David Hastings wins
WSOC-radio scholarship
. David Morris Hastings of Walkertown
has received the $500 WSOC Radio and
Television Scholarship for study at UNC,
Dr. Wesley Wallace, chairman Of the
Radio, Television and 1 Motion Pictures
Department announced today i n 't
n j Hastings transferred to the University
last summer from Catawba College. He
has worked summrs and part-time as a
production assistant at WSJS-TV in
Winston Salem.
As an East Forsyth High School
student, Hastings attended the 1 967 N.C.

High School Radio and Television
Summer Institute at the University. -
The Scholarship is awarded to a junior
or senior majoring in. the RTVMP
Department and living within the WSOC
Radio-Television broadcast area. Students
"must demonstrate academic
achievement and an obvious interest in
broadcasting."
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Morris
Hastings of Rt. 4, Walkertown.
Cairo U. professor
visits pharmacy school
Dr. Shafik Balbaa, dean of the Faculty
of Pharmacy of Cairo University recently
visited the UNC School of Pharmacy for a
three-day visit.
Dr. George P. Hager, dean of the UNC
School of Pharmacy, was host to Dr.
Balbaa while he toured the School and
other UNC and Research Triangle
Facilities.
Dr. Balbaa's United States tour was
sponsored by the World Health
Organization and included visits to eight
schools of pharmacy.
Dr. Lee receives grant
for study of cancer
A grant in excess of $59,000 has been
awarded to Dr. Kuo-Hsiung Lee of the
UNC School of Pharmacy by the National
Cancer Institute of the National Institutes
of Health.
Dr. Lee will study the biochemical and
synthetic properties of helanalin and
related derivatives for anti-cancer activity.
Dr. Lee is a graduate of the University
of Minnesota and did post doctoral
studies at UCLA. He is with the medicinal
chemistry department of the School of
Pharmacy.
Debbie Potter winner
of broadcasting grant
Deborah Ann Potter is the winner of
the $750 Roy H. Park Scholarship for
study in broadcasting at UNC, Dr. Wesley
"Wallace, chairman of the Radio,
Television and Motion Pictures
Department, announced today.
v Selected as this year's "outstanding
junior woman," Miss Potter received the
Jane Craige Gray Award presented by
Kappa Delta sorority.
Although she was manager of campus
radio station WCAR, her activities on
campus ! have ;. not . been limited to

recently initiated into Phi Beta Kappa

gives service awards
Four North Carolinians and one New
Yorker have been awarded the UNC
School of Medicine's Distinguished
Service Awards.
Adelaide and Howard Ho'derness of
Greensboro, Dr. Jacob Koornen of
Rakish, Dr. Ralph SUer Morgan of Syha
and John M. Russell of New York
received the awards at the annual medical
alumni dinner held here in Chapel Hill.
This award was started in l'?55 on the
75th anniversary of the founding of the
UNC Medical School to recognize those
who contributed importantly to the
establishment and early growth of the
four-year medical school.
The award is designed to honor alumni
and friends whose distinguished careers
and unselfish contributions to society
have added luster and prestige to the
University and its medical school. ,
