Association of Women Students (AWS)
will be moving in a new direction this
year, said AWS President Cathy
Cauthorne.
Miss Cauthorne told a Monday night
organizational meeting the purpose of
AWS this year is to "make women aware
of what is available to them on campus."
"We want AW"S to be a channel for
what women want. If there's something
you want to do we'll back you if it's at all
feasible," she continued.
Miss Cauthorne outlined the projects
planned by AW'S members for the coming
year and explained the purposes of the
organization to new members.

A member of presidential candidate
Sen. George McGovern's staff will visit
UNC Thursday afternoon to organize
students for a local campaign.
Kirby Jones will talk at 4 p.m. in the
Great Hall of the Student Union. A
question and answer session will follow.
"He will talk about the McGovern
campaign in general and how students can
get involved in the campaign," said Becky
Hannah, one of McGovern's local campus
organizers. "Jones will gear his
suggestions to the local level."
A 1960 UNC graduate, Jones was
campaign manager for Al Lowenstein in
his successful 1968 bid for a New York
seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Upon graduation from UNC, Jones
worked in Greensboro with Manpower
Development Corporation, a group which
trains unskilled workers.
He directed field operations for Dick
Ottinger in his New York campaign for
the U.S. Senate last year.
An organizational meeting for the
McGovern campus campaign is tentatively
set for 7:30 p.m., Sept. 15 in the Student
Union.
"One of the campus campaign's top
priorities will be voter registration," said
Miss Hannah.
The National McGovern organization
will sponsor a voter registration drive Oct.
18-26.
Sen. McGovern CD-S.) became the first
announced candidate for the 1972
presidential election last January. He has
served in the U.S. Congress for 12 years,
four in the House of Representatives and
eight as U.S. Senator
