Friday, September 17, 1971 .Bnke -South Carolina clash biggest attraction .Football predictions The Daily Tar Heel by A l Thomas Sp rl: Writer Alth'i-jph Ijr Httl fans will be intently matching event', in Illinois this weekend, rno;t of the attention m the Atlantic foa'.t Conference will be centered on Walla. e Wade Stadium in Durham. Duke, upset winner over Florida last Saturday, is scheduled to battle non-conference foe South Carolina, upset winner over a strong Georgia Tech team last week. 'I he game is considered a toss-up. Duke surprised almost everyone in the Southeast with their stunning 1 2-6 ooters set for opener after practice by Daid Zucchino Spurts Writer Cojch Marvin Allen's Carolina soccer squad wound up game-style preparations for next week's home opener Wednesday afternoon in Laurinburg, punching out a 4-2 decision over St. Andrews College. I he entire Tar Heel squad saw action in the extended six period practice game, allowing Allen to formulate a tentative starting lineup for next Monday's opening game vs. Appalachian at 3:00 on Fetzer Field. Freshman Nick Jones will start off in the goal, supported by fullbacks Van Rugby Saturday The Carolina rugby club begins its season Saturday at Fhringhaus Field against the James River club of Richmond. Va. (lame time is 2:00 for the A side, with a B side game to follow imrnediaUly . Despite heavy losses from last year's squad, the ruggers appear confident. Fleet newcomers Adrian Wood and Brit Nicholson will join Tommy Clay and George Ihitler in the backfield. ('apt. John Parsons may be forced to miss the game with a practice injury, the scrum should be solid with veterans Steve Nash, Dave Paris and Ted Lambeth. Until very recently, if you set out with four hundred dollars to pur chase a complete stereo system, you were likely to be disappointed. To purchase a music system that could reproduce the lowest octave(s) of deep bass, you found you had to spend about six hundred dollars; for four hundred dollars a component system did not exist which could produce really low bass. But this has now changed. Because of two new products, we are now able to offer (and guarantee) a complete AMFM stereo phono graph system which provides the necessary range to reproduce all music. The system consists of two new Smaller Advent Loudspeakers, a Sansui 350aJAMFM stereo receiver, and a Garrard 406 automatic turntable with a Stanton cartridge. The new Smaller Advent Loud speakers and the Sansui receiver make possible the increased performance and lower cost of this system. The Smaller Advent is the only loudspeaker costing less than the original Advent which can repro duce the entire musical range. Through the Smaller Advent you can hear the bottom octave of piano and pipe organ, the lowest notes of the double bass, or the bottom string of an electric bass guitar. (These low frequency sounds have a lot to do with the enjoyment you will derive from your music system.) ' ji Garrard f Stanton . victory in Tampa. The Blue Devils lost the superb passing combination of Lee Hart and Wes Chesson through graduation, but apparently they gamed a lot more. Steve Jones, a junior fullback, repeatedly blasted his way through the Florida forward wall for 204 yards of rushing. With Jones moving the football, soccer-style kicker Dave Wright booted four field goals for Duke's scoring. Duke has an excellent runner, good hnes, an excellent kicking game and with Mike McGee, a new and energetic coach. Duke is capable of beating almost everyone on the schedule. victory Allen, Arden Sterling and Jim Smith. John McCallie and BUI Isherwood will man the halfback positions, while veterans Karl Muster, Dan Ariail, Kip Ward and Anson Dorrance will hold down the crucial front line. The offense, according to Allen, showed a marked improvement over last week's lackluster performance. Allen singled out the consistent play of forward Dan Ariail, who "always looks good," but expressed his concern about Carolina's play around mid-field. The forward wall appears to be in sure hands and will prove to be the squad's strongest feature in the season's early going. Jones has made a few noticeable mistakes in the goal, but he's only a freshman and will definitely get much better as the season progresses. "We had a few bright spots against St. Andrews," said Allen., but there's no way to tell at this point how we'll do this season." Ariail scored two goals in the scrimmage victory, taking two assists from Ward in the first and last periods. In between, Ward booted in a goal in the second quarter with a Karl Muster assist, and then turned in his third assist on Muster's score. After two practice games, Ariail has four goals and four assists, Ward has three and five, and Dorrance has two and two. with stereo components by Advent, Sansui On all kinds of musical material, and, under most listening condi tions likely to apply in most homes, the Smaller Advent is the equal of any speaker system available. No technical sorcery is responsible for the surprising performance of the Smaller Advent Loudspeaker. To build into the speaker its excel lent low frequency capabilities, Advent has had to give up a small amount of efficiency and power handling ability: the Smaller Advents will not play as loudly as the larger Advents. The Sansui . AMFM stereo receiver provides enough power to satisfy both you and the Advent speakers; it delivers into the four ohm Advents more than 44 watts of RMS power, over the entire audio range, with less than 0.7 total distortion. (RMS is the most demanding and least flashy of the various power rating systems.) The FM and AM tuner sections of the 350a receiver are both sensi tive and selective: weak stations as well as strong will be received with a surprising fullness and clarity. To match the level of quality which the 350a receiver and the Smaller Advent speakers represent, we recommend the Garrard 40b automatic turntable. It has a good heavy platter, a convenient cueing control, and minimal (also inaud ible) wow, flutter, and rumble. The 40b . with the Advent speakers and the 350a receiver, allow us to offer you a quality sound system at a cost substantially lower than that The trouble for Duke this week, however, is that South Carolina seems to be at least as strong. The Gamecocks have 15 offensive and 16 defensive lettermen returning. Dickie Harris, the dangerous defensive back who has a knack for turning a simple punt return into a touchdown, leads the cast. This is the first year of independence from the ACC for South Carolina, and the Gamecocks are undoubtedly trying harder. Pollsters are divided as to the outcome of the game, and even the fact they are playing at Duke during the day (South Carolina plays most of its games at night) could be enough to decide the outcome. Other games involving ACC teams Saturday include UNC at Illinois, State at Maryland, Wake Forest at Virginia Tech and Virginia at Michigan. National pollsters seem to be favoring the Illini over the Tar Heels. Bob Blackraan's Illinois team is big, strong and quick, and a Bib Ten school rarely loses on home ground. Illinois' offense was sporadic against Michigan State, with the Illini losing 10-0 last week. The Tar Heels are strong defensively, however, and whether the Illinois offense can jell this week is highly questionable. No matter who wins, the final score w ill be close-and there probably won't be many points scored by either team. The State-Maryland clash should go a long way in deciding which team will accompany Virginia at the bottom of the ACC. Neither team was impressive in last week's openers, and both teams have the potential for going through the entire season without ever looking impressive. Virginia, probably the weakest team in the conference, is set to invade Big Ten territory and do battle with fourth-ranked Michigan. Pray for the Cavaliers. Wake Forest had an unexpectedly tough time with Davidson last week, and could be in for trouble against Virginia Tech if changes aren't made. The Deacons have the potential for completely overpowering Tech, but their showing last week has raised serious questions as to their true strength. Quarterback Larry Russell scored four touchdowns in the final quarter against Davidson, but the Deacons will have to generate more offensive power than that if they expect to repeat as conference champions. which was previously possible. We include with the 40b adust cover, a base, and a Stanton 500a cartridge a smooth, light tracKing, wide-range cartridge with fine high frequency capabilities. It complements the excellent high frequency characteristics of the Smaller Advent Loudspeakers and the Sansui receiver. The complete system, guaranteed for two years, parts and labor, costs $400 You can sit back and hear all the music. ln most talk about stereo equip ment, a "new" product is one that is.either "better" or "worse" than a "not-new" product. (Sometimes it is "the same", but with a few additional frills black-light front panel. Day-Glo controls. Remote Control, etc.) The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker is really "new" not better or worse than the original Advent. It was designed to answer a very real need the need for a quality loudspeaker at low cost and of small size which could provide every sonic characteristic that most people associate with the best pos sible loudspeaker, when connected to a low-cost receiver or amplifier. Iml Lana plays upsets for lead The second week of football predictions gives the DTH prognosticators a chance to pick up from their dismal performance a week ago or it could spell further disaster. Associate editor Lana Starnes, in last place a year ago, picked the upsets and finished in first place after a week with a 7-3 record. Editor Harry Bryan and assistant sports editor Howie Can are second at 6-4, with sports writer Al Thomas at 5-5. In the rear, sports editor Mark Whicker and sports writer Dan Collins dropped six of 10 picks, and King Nyle I finished 3-7 to ruin his hopes for a perfect season. "I thought the South Carolina-Georgia Tech game was especially fine," said Lana innocently. She selected the Gamecocks to defeat Tech. Everyone else played the percentages. On the The staff was completely fooled by Duke's success at Florida, so several are retaliating by picking the Blue Devils over South Carolina in Durham this week. 'The sports staff really got caught with its pants down this time." Bryan said while observing the results. Whicker and Collins, however, answered him immediately with a decisive, "Oh, yeah?" Again the selections this week jre rather uniform. Everyone expects Arizona State to maintain a national reputation with a victory over Houston, and since most seemed to lose faith in UCLA after last week's loss to Pitt., the Texas-UCLA game is not even on the board. Although Tulane is becoming one of the South's major powers, the fact that the Green Wave is playing away from r HAPPY 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. $.05 Off on all Prices FREE MUNCHIES Alley by the Record Bar 10 ways to make a Wachovia teller smile. 1 Walk into the bank. 2 Saunter into the bank. 3 Trot into the bank. 4 Amble into the bank. 5 Jog into the bank. 6 Stroll into the bank. 7 Run into the bank. 8 Waltz into the bank. 9 March into the bank. 10 Wander into the bank.
