Wednesday. October 20. 1971 The Daily Tar Hel p: ameuaniuLinai by Debbie Smith Feature Writer "Curios of the Cosmos" premiered yesterday at the Morehead Planetarium. The Planetarium show gives viewers an opportunity to put into proper perspective some spectacular "headline markers" of astronomy. "We project some headlines from the New York Times concerning celestial phenomena, and then attempt to explain astronomy in detail in relation to these heads to make the subject more relevant to the observer," commented John A. Zunes, Lducational Supervisor of the Morehead Planetarium. The program deals with those astronomical happenings near the earth, like comets, meteors and asteroids, that are read about in magazines and newspapers. Newly detected clavses of celestial objects from deep space are examined in association with almost incomprehensible speeds and distances. Included will be quasars and puLsars. The concert is sponsored b the Carolina Union Music Committee. The artist's style uses American finger picking styles. Hindu musical techniques. Western European classicism, and the Japanese and Middle Eastern scales to bnng about an appreciation of a stmi-clasical six and 12-strmg steel guitar tradition. Although upon first hearing, he sterns to hae much m common with John Fahey . another new-sour.ds-for-the-cuitar pioneer, closer examination reveals certain differences in their styles. The artist says that his ""new pegusus style" evolved after his religious experience, uhich was responsible for his denial of the acid rock scene. He says that his discovery of Meher Baba made him "take a look at myself and get cleaned up." From his days in the underground music cult in which he sported the long hair and beard, he has adopted a new image, as seen on the cover of one of his albums, as he dons Persian dress and mounts a white stallion to emphasize the complex Persian and Hindu rhy thms that characterize his new style.
