CHARLOTTE-Liquor by the drink referendums in Mecklenburg s
counties were expected to draw a record number of voters for a non-candii

William B.A. Culp, executive secretary of the Mecklenburg County Meet,
predicted a turnout of about 70,000, or nearly half of the county's 142,00
voters.
In Moore County, about 10,000 of the 15,600 registered voters wer
make it to the polls.
In addition to intense voter interest in the referendums, the U.S. Weath.r h
predicted perfect weather for outdoor activity. Clear, sunny skies :
temperatures reaching into the 60s were forecast.
Pro-liquor and anti-liquor forces in both counties predicted victory. ;!th

HIGH POINT -The State Highway Commission Thursday increased the 1

The commission voted the increase from 65 miles per hour for portions A ! ' '
40, Interstate 26, Interstate 77, Interstate 85 and Interstate 95.
The longest single stretch of highway affected by the hike is the 0 -Interstate
