Tuesday, November 30, 1971 Group debuts in March The Daily Tar Heel radis create repertory compamy by Bruce Mann A distant Feature Editor Three former UNC students J. E. Deitz, John L. Haber and Gay H. Baynes - have combined interests and talents to form the Carolina Repertory Company, a theatrical hope currently evolving into a three-fold organizational reality of touring company, educational theatre group, and resident professional theatre troupe centralized in the Research Triangle Park. Partially funded by a North Carolina Arts Council Grant, the company, though still in its budding stage, is moving assuredly yet cautiously toward the fulfillment of its goals under the leadership of artistic director Haber, executive producer Dietz and assistant producer Baynes. "What we eventually want, of course, is the three-part organization," pointed out Dietz during an interview in the Company's Rosemary Street offices. "Ihe strategy to get there, we think, is to start with a family entertainment touring company - first of all, because it covers the state, secondly, because it gives us a chance to show what we mean by professional quality, and thirdly, because this way we can actually start building an audience." The ten-week tour across the state, which begins in March, is already solidly planned and will feature 80 performances of an original musical production based on James Thurber's "The Wonderful O." Written by UNC's. own creative writing graduate with music and lyrics by Asheville composer Ann Sternberg, 'The Wonderful O" will be performed at various centers, in public schools and on college campuses. In the schools, certain preparatory study guides will precede the performances, and after-performance seminars will solidify the dramatic experience. On campuses, the entertainment and theatrical challenge should provide a unique evening at the theatre. "For college students," says Dietz, "I hope we can offer a top flight musical which will be both exciting to see and participate in emotionally." Haber, who has been working with the artists on "The Wonderful O" since January, feels that the multi-tiered interpretation of the play lends itself well to college audiences. "James Thurber wrote on many levels, because he loved to work in the realm of fantasy. But underneath the fantasy, there are numerous aspects of society and people in society that Thurber was interested in dealing with. "'The Wonderful O,' for instance, is about the letter O, and Thurber comments on what would happen to society if you took away the letter O and you could no longer have words like love, hope, valor, and freedom." The play, which will tour with a company of 16 players and five musicians, premieres March on the UNC campus in a run sponsored by the Carolina Union. The tour will just be the beginning of the Repertory Company's ambitious plans. First and foremost, they wish to provide family entertainment in the state. They feel that "there's a lot that theatre can communicate in some ways to all people maybe not the same way. But art has the quality of different levels which can somehow relate to any kind of person." They also plan to provide professional employment for the many North Carolina trained drama graduates who, until the coming of the Repertory Company, could find no financial incentive to stay in local theatre. Further work in establishing an educational theatre program in the public schools, with the continued help of the Cultural Arts Division of the Office of Public Instruction, is also underway. And in building a strong regional theatre, they hope also to add to the "great richness" of the arts heritage of the state which already boasts of such acclaimed arts groups as the N.C. Symphony, the N.C. Museum of Art, the School of the Arts, the outdoor drama tradition, and the Carolina Playmakers. All three of the dynamic, young theatrical trio have personal associations with North Carolina. Haber, an Asheville native, holds an A.B. with Honors in dramatic arts from UNC-CH, and he is a former president of the Carolina Student Union. Dietz, from Syracuse, N.Y., is an A.B. graduate from UNC-CH and former student body Nice-president. Miss Baynes, a Greensboro native, followed her Honors work at UNC-G with an M.A. in dramatic arts at UNC-CH. But it's more than just local associations that brings the group together in North Carolina after sojourns by their individual members for study abroad and in New York. Haber explains. "Being in New York and away from North Carolina, we got a perspective of "DO YOU OWN YOUR BODY?" "We were interested in the type of theatre that would reach large sections of the population - such as people who had never been to the theatre before. We see the theatre as an art form that can be tremendously exciting and relevant to the majority of the population.
