Wednesday , December 1, 1971 The Dairy Tar Heel '?v'xttc:;S'" wimMiBg team today against Devils by Dan Collins Sports Writer It has been a very good fall for the Carolina swimming team. I he practices started early with almost the entire squad working out individually. Ih.- enthusiasm has been plentiful and vvryone seems to have improved over !;st season. Correction forward Bill Chamberlain was . p-.-nded from Carolina's basketball before Friday night's intrasquad ..'i mm age, not because of it as Tor.eously reported in the Daily Tar i : :v! T uesday. Chamberlain, last year's most valuable :hyer in the National Invitation I ornament, was placed on suspension . In this wild, single . !:mination tournament of two 18 minute i Jves, continuous clock and only 3 r.me-outs, accuracy is of the essence. It .ens that the favored Dental Blue had an abundance of this as they topped the Guppies 73-60. Webb got 22 and Dernpsey 19 to lead the Dentists. The meet will bezin at 4 cm. It seems as thougn everyone connected with the swimming team has been caught up in the overwhelming enthusiasm the team has displayed. This includes veteran Head Coach Pat Earey. ''I think probably we have had one of the best practice seasons ever," Coach Farey said. "This is due largely to the strength of the enthusiasm and desire of the co-captains Ron Nagel and Gerry Chapman. if desire makes the difference then I think we should have an outstanding season." Coach Larey feels the major objective of the opening Duke meet is to give each swimmer a chance to gain a perspective for the season. He said that probably every- member of the team will ee action during the contest. "Both us and Duke thus meet as an in tourney Flavuses, led by Postma with 15, Baker with 15 and Pollard with 13, topped the ZBT Blue 54-39. Phi Delt Blue beat Sig .Lp I 62-52 with Dorrall scoring 18, Eddie Fogler sank a 10 footer in the final two seconds to give the Lab Retrievers a 55-53 win over Pi Kapp3 Phi Blue. Chip Stone got 15 for the winners and Kemp got 19 for the losers. LET YOUR CHRISTMAS CARDS HAVE A PERSONAL TOUCH "MAKE YOUR OWN WITH SILK SCREEN OR LINOLEUM BLOCKS PRINTING. Coach Earey indicated that h:s team will hit a tough spot in the schedule ear! when they face both Maryland and Navy this weekend. The Heels will travel to Annapolis this Saturday and then College Park next Monday. "inese two meets should give us a good line on our potential this season." Coach Earey said, 'if we could win against these two teams, who are probably favored on paper, it would give us a tremendous incentive for the rest cf the season." There have been no major surprises during the practices, Coach Earey said, but he felt almost everyone has improved. "We have had most of the people to Live up to expectation " "Peter Bonds has done better at this stage than he had at this stage lat season," he said, "and I think Jike Southard has improved also." "Then too, Dave Bedell is coming off a very successful summer it should help his performance this season.
