Monday. December 6, 1971 Neivs in brief !N.C. vets Barade in Greensboro s The Daily Tar Heel . v nit ii n n ' 1 The N.C. Veterans for Peace - banned from the Greensboro Christmas parade on Thanksgiving Day - will hold their own parade Saturday in Greensboro. The Greensboro Merchant's Association told the veterans on the day of the parade they would not be allowed to present the float they had prepared. "We were told we were a disgrace to our uniforms, that we were improperly dressed to appear, and that we weren't really veterans," said Bob Burdette, a spokesman for the veterans. "We were all veterans of Vietnam and we were wearing the jungle gear we wore in combat," he added. Burdette said the group then obtained a permit to stage their own parade. Teh N.C. Veterans for Peace are also circulating a petition for amnesty for all persons who, "for reasons of conscience, have refused to participate in the Vietnam war effort." "This includes political exiles abroad, prisoners at home and any under indictment by the Justice Department," Burdette said. The veterans are also planning a veterans' advisory office on campus which will offer advice and counseling to the nearly 1,300 veterans on campus next year, he said. Applications due for Lyon study Applications for the 1972-73 Year at Lyon are being accepted now through March 15. Under the program, now in its eighth year, 30 UNC undergraduates spend a full academic year at the University of Lyon, France, and receive 30 academic hours credit for their work there. Although participation in the program normally comes in the junior year, it is open to all undergraduates. It is not necessary to be a French major to participate in the program, administered by the Department of Romance Languages. Costs for the full academic year program are the normal UNC tuition rates (in-state or out-of-state) with the only extra expense being the transportation to and from Lyon. Selections for the program will be announced after April 1, 1972. Dr. Yves de la1 Queriere will accompany the group to Lyon next year, while Dr. Frederick Vogler will continue to serve as program director here. Further information, including application forms, is available at 239 Dey IIjII.
