"The consensus among Notre Dame people was that Carolina wasn't as devastating
as they expected, said an Indiana writer Saturday afternoon.
Naturally, because UNC is saving its devastation for more important opponents.
The Tar Heels beat Notre Dame, 99-74, in Madison Square Garden Saturday
afternoon, but they played with "not very much enthusiasm," as Coach Dean Smith
put it.
Carolina is now 18-3 and backed into a tie for the ACC lead when Duke upset
Virginia Saturday night. The win was the 998th in school history. Notre Dame's record
fell to 6-15. hut for most of the first half the Irish looked vastly improved from the
94-29 December disaster against Indiana.

Carolina outduelled N.C. Central's
crack mile relay team and added six more
first place finishes Saturday en route to a
resounding tri-meet performance in
Chapel Hill's Tin Can.
No team totals were kept in the meet,
but Coach Joe Hilton's Tar Heels raced to
wins in seven of eleven events and
chalked up second place finishes in the
other four events.
N.C. Central picked up the four
remaining first places, but failed to win as
expected in the mile relay as Tar Heel
senior Don Whelass overcame an early
Central lead to propel Carolina to a
surprisingly easy victory.
A.J. Foyt wheels Mercury
to one-lap Daytona 500 win
Daytona Beach, Fla. (UPI) -Three-time
Indianapolis 500 winner A.J.
Foyt rolled to an easy one-lap victory in
the Daytona 500 Sunday as smashups and
engine failures wiped out most of the
other superstars of the stock car circuit.
Foyt, making one of his infrequent
starts on the NASCAR circuit, grabbed
the lead in his 1971 Mercury when stock
car king Richard Petty was knocked out
with a broken valve '' spring "in his 1972
Plymouth after 200 miles. ' ' " -
With Petty sidelined, Foyt dominated
the rest of the field as he maintained his
comfortable margin over runnerup
Charlie Glotzbach in a 1971 Dodge.

ENCOUNTERTAPES
There will be an
organizational meeting and
informal discussion on
Encounter tapes at 4:00 p.m.
Monday in the Carolina
Union. Facilitators will be
available to answer questions
that students may have
concerning the program.
Some students were unable
to enroll in the groups offered
earlier this semester due to
time conflicts. Facilitators are
now available for persons who
would like to participate in
the Encounter tape program
one weekend or two
consecutive weekends. The
program consists of ten one
and one-half hour session of
structured exercises designed
to aid participants in better
understand themselves, others
and their relationships with
others.
The personal growth
encountertapes were
developed by the Western
Behavioral Sciences Institute.
Drs. Carl Rogers, William C
Schutz, Irving Janis, and
Arnold Beisser consulted with
the Institute in their
development. The Union has
been sponsoring the
Encountertape program for
the past two years.
Wheless, running second in the Tar
Heel unit composed of Winfred Falls,
Tony Waldrop and Lennox Stewart,
blazed ahead on his second lap and
Waldrop and Stewart breezed the rest of
the way to a 3.25.5 finish.
'They didn't have their best relay
team in the meet," Hilton commented
afterwards, "but we still didn't expect to
beat them. I'm real pleased with the way
the relay team ran and in general with the
way everybody performed for us. We're
making very good progress."
Stewart and Waldrop also contributed
an individual win apiece in addition to
their relay triumph. Stewart outfoxed
Central's heralded Robert Ouko for first
place in the 100-yd run, while Waldrop
ran an impressive 4:12 mile against
Foyt averaged 161.550 miles per hour,
a new record for the premiere event in
stock car racing.
Jim Vandiver finished third in a 1970
Dodge and Benny Parsons was fourth in a
1970 Mercury both six laps back of
Foyt.
Foyt, 37, of Houston, Tex., took
$38,400 of the $200,000 purse.
"The car performed just beautiful all
day," he said. "I never. like , to - have a
long lead like that. You always think
something is going to happen to your car.
I like to race like Richard Petty and I
started out."

The Tar Heels had a precarious 47-41 half tine lead, built raairJy because the Irish
just couldn't keep their hands to themselves. Carolina made 11 of 12 free throws in
the half; that swelled to 27 for 37 for the game. Tom O'Mara, a pre mature ly-gray
sophomore who scored 20 points, fouled out early in the second half and guard Don
Silinski soon followed him.
But Robert McAdoo, who is playing as though oblivious to all the professional talk
flying around him, calmly sank four straight buckets in a two-minute stretch to give
Carolina a 61-51 lead.
Then Notre Dame couldn't score for three minutes, and the Tar Heels winged to a
16-point advantage with 13:03 to go. The 6,438 fans in the Garden might as well have
left.
They would have been spared one two-minute stretch when both teams tripped and
veteran teammate Larry Widgeon.
Ouko, the world's seventh ranked over
800 meters, was joined at the start of the
1000-yd run Saturday by teammate Mel
Bassett, who was presumedly sent in to
"run the rabbit," or set a fast early place
in order to make Stewart commit himself
too early.
Steward held back, though, and
sprinted past Ouko on the last lap for a
2:16.8 victory. Ouko ended up at 2:17.2,
followed by Central's Ralph Kirkman in
third place.
Waldrop's 4.12 finish in the mile was
two seconds better than Widgeon's 4.14,
as Carolina swept all three places in the
event. Mike Caldwell was third with
4:19.5.
Widgeon stayed around later in the
the USAC circuit, said he respected the
NASCAR drivers "because they don't
give an inch."
Petty, the popular defending
champion and the only three-time winner
of the Daytona 500, said he "dropped a
valve" going 190 miles an hour down the
back straightway on the 80th lap.
"The car just bumped a little bit,"
drawled Petty. "I knew I'd had it. The
only trouble I'd had before that was
Foyt."
Foyt toyed with Glotzbach during the
final laps. "We were just trying to stay in
front of him," said Glen Wood, Foyt's
crew chief.

afternoon and ran the gruelling two-mile
event and finished a strong second to
Carolina's record-setting Reggie McAfee.
McAfee, who h3s set two school records
in the mile over the past two weeks,
broke away from the rest of the field
early in the race and lapped every body on
the track at least once.
McAfee led a UNC sweep in the fine
time of 8:55.5, only four and one half
seconds off Widgeon's school record.
Widgeon finished second at 9:19 and
Carolina's Bruce Hafemeister was third at
9:39.
The Tar Heels started off the meet by
capturing three of the four field events,
capped off by Darryl Kelly's usual win in
the triple jump. Kelly leaped 50-1 for the
victory, well ahead of teammate Hubert
West's 46-6. Wake Forest picked up its
only place of the meet behind John
Sanderson's 41 -Vi jump.
West took the broad jump at 23-4 34
and Chuck Ball went 6-6 for a first place
finish in the high jump. N.C. Central's
Doug McDonald won the shot put, but
Carolina's Brad Mullinax and Lee
McLaughlin took second and third.
N.C. Central's speed and depth
prevailed in the high hurdles, the 60-yd
dash and the 600-yd run. Charles Foster
and Chuck Johnson placed 1-2 in the
hurdles, followed by Carolina's David
Hawkins.
Larry Black nosed out Tar Heel Mike
Canzonieri in the 60. Both were clocked
at 6.4, but Black broke the tape a
split-second ahead of Canzonieri.
Carolina's Hank Snowden took third at
6.5.
Saturday's meet was the Tar Heels
final warmup for this weekend's ACC
Indoor Championships, scheduled for
Saturday afternoon in the Tin Can.

stumbled around the hallowed floor without scoring. UNC rem emrered the rudiments
in the game before Notre Dame did. and eventually coasted into their 25 -point bulgs.
Bill Chamberlain, the Garden star in March when he captured the NTT's most
valuable player award, played well again. He scored 22 points and sank 10 of I -J field
goal attempts.
Following him in scoring .were McAdoo, with 20. and Den.ia Wuyctk. with 17.
Wuycik made only three of 1 ! field coal tnes but found a home on the foul hr.e.
making all 1 1 attempts and adding 1 1 rebounds.
'This wasn't one of Wuyciks better games," Smith observed. "I think he was
pressing. He played only eight minutes in the NIT last year before injuring his knee,
and he really wanted to play well in the Garden today.
Smith also pointed to the sudden lapses cn Tar Hell fast breaks. "We didn't convert
as many of them as I would have liked," he said. "But we kept trying to force a fast
tempo because we had more size than Notre Dame."
Bobby Jones came off the bench with 12 points and five rebounds; McAdoo led the
board department with 12.
McAdoo blocked a Gary Novak shot in the first half, but Novak returned the favor
later despite a three-inch height disadvantage. The Irish led by four early in the game
on the shooting of Novak who scored 21, and O'Mara. but Wuycik hit five straight free
throws to bring Carolina ahead. UNC finally overcame its ball-handling mistakes for a
41-33 lead with 4:24 to go.
That margin came when George Karl hit a 15 -footer, Wuvcik fed Kim Huband on a
two-on-one fast break, and Huband hit an lS-focter. Before those scores, the Irish
muffed a chance by throwing the ball away after Bill Chambers and Donn Johnston
collided.
However, the Irish surged within three on O'Mara foul shots. Then Johnston and
Chamberlain gave UNC the halftime lead.
Steve Previs had a typical game, scoring four points and getting six assists along with
good defensive play. Guarding Silinski in the second half, he also played referee.
Silinski couldn't get around, over or through Previs for five seconds, as Steve started
counting "one. . .two. .three, .four. .five. . . call it!"
Referee Joe DeBonis immediately whistled a jump ball.
Just another example of Tar Heel versatility.
Parkhill goes ice-cold
as Virginia loses 86-76
The Duke Blue Devils rose to the
occasion Saturday night, coming up with
one of the biggest upsets of the ACC
season.
They topped sixth-ranked Virginia
86-76 Saturday night on the Cavalier's
home court, as all five starters scored over
15 points.
All-American candidate Barry Parkhill
will probably have nightmares about his
performance. He hit only five of 21 field
goal attempts and scored 14 points. It
was Virginia's second loss in a row; the
Cavs were beaten by 12 at Penn State
Wednesday night.
The Blue Devils, who led 40-36 at
halftime, were guided by Chris Redding
with 18 points. Ron Righter contributed
17, Gary Melchionni and Stu Yarbrough
added 16 each and Alan Shaw scored 15.
Melchionni handled the ball wisely and
