With less than four months left before
the summer vacation period, business is
picking up at the summer job reading
room of the UNC Placement Service,
according to summer employment
counselor Geri Wilson.
Wilson stresses that the service she
directs is open to all UNC students, from
freshmen to graduates. "We've tried to
particularly reach the freshman class,"
she said, "because they will then be able
to use the service for a total of four
years."
In addition, Wilson reminds students
that the main emphasis of the summer
job program is on assistance and an
opportunity to discuss methods by which
the individual may locate and apply for
summer jobs.
"Placement often connotes definite
placement in a specific job. What we offer
is assistance. Ultimately, getting a job is
up to the student," Wilson said.
Currently, the second portion of the
"Colloquoy on Summer Jobs" is being
conducted by Wilson to acquaint students
with the services of the summer job
reading room and to remind people who
want jobs that they should being looking
immediately. Many government offices
have already stopped accepting
employment applications.
At this point in the spring semester,
260 people have completed registration
with Wilson's office, while a total of 625
people made use of summer employment
assistance last year.

Canada 'not fully committed'
Secretary ot State William P. Rogers mei tor an hour Thursday in Washington with
Canadian External Affairs Minister Mitchell Sharp, who expressed continued
reservations about his country's role in policing the Vietnam cease-fire.
Canada's main objection to the method of policing the military standdown is that
the supervisory force also consisting of Indonesia, Poland and Hungary will have no

Holshouser warns officials
Gov. Jim Holshouser, declaring that political manipulation of the state's highway
system is over, Thursday warned Highway Department officials that "heads will roll"
if they don't toe the line.
Holshouser called department heads and field engineers together and told them
from now on they take their orders from and answer to Transportation Secretary
Bruce Lentz, not their local highway commissioner.
Holshouser made it clear he was downgrading the role of the 23-member Highway
Commission, which frequently was involved in controversy during the administration
of Gov. Bob Scott.
