CHLOE IN THE AFTERNOON (L'AMOUR L'APRES-MIDI) A film by Eric Rohmer. Produced by Pierre Cottrell. Cinematography by Nestor Almendros. Screenplay by Eric Rohmer. Les Films du Lonsange-Barbet Schroeder Production. In French, English sub-titles. At the Varsity Theater, Chapel Hill. Eric Rohmer has completed his series of six contes moraux and hopes were high that the last of the films would be able to hold up and complete the set. "L'amour L'apres-midi" is easily as fascinating and exciting as "Le Genou do Claire" ("Claire's Knee") and just as uniquely erotic and stimulating as "Ma Nuit Chez Maud" ("My Night at Maud's"). It also has the extra special something which fulfills all hopes of a proper closing for this film hexagon an actress named Zouzou. Rohmer, more than any other screenwriter or filmmaker, has the ability to make a woman desirable and alluring. His actresses are not classically beautiful or conventionally pretty, but eternally female and understandably intelligent. He has remarked that his female characters "are not necessarily more sympathetic, but they are more clear-minded." I doubted if he could ever capture my heart again as he did with Laura (Beatrice Romand) in "Claire's Knee," but I was swept away totally by Chloe, unlike any other woman I've ever seen on the screen. N.Y. 10019 In the Prologue, Mile. Romand reappeared with all the other women from Rohmer's tales in a daydream sequence, and simply reminded me again of my admiration for her before I fell for Zouzou. I was left to ponder, like the film's hero. Frederic, the possibility of loving two actresses at the same time. . M. Rohmer says a man may simultaneously admire two women, but love only one at a time with passion. Passion and two women have been the subjects of each of the moral tales: a man who is committed to one woman finds himself falling in love with another. In "L'amour L'apres-midi," Frederic, married to Helene, becomes passionately attracted to Chloe, and must decide between the two. As always, Rohmer's hero chooses the most moral solution. Bernard Verley, as Frederic, is completely convincing as the bourgeois suburban Parisian who is maybe a little bored with his marriage. "Since I've been married I find all women beautiful," he admits to himself and the audience. Chloe is the most available and immediately beautiful of them all. Sadly, Rohmer resorts to an over-voice narration to reveal many of Frederic's ideas and much of his character. In previous films, the hero developed from enchanting dialogues with other characters who provided contrasts and on-screen listeners. It is disappointing that Rohmer could not have again created a device as stimulating and effective as Aurora, the novelist, in "Le Genou de Claire." This use of Frederic's voice on the soundtrack to fill jn and sharpen his character is the only indication that perhaps Rohmer is running low on ideas for his moral tales. Zouzou is either the person who inspired Rohmer to create Chloe, or she is the most beguiling actress to appear this year. From blue jeans thorugh pants suits to Yves Saint laurent dresses, she makes each her own special kind of clothing, made for no other possible character. As Chloe, she tantalizes, falls in love with, and decides to seduce Frederic. She would like to have a baby without the required husband-hindrance: she wants Frederic to be the father of her child. Frederic's wife has her second child at the end of the "Premiere Part," and can at last return completely to her studying and teaching. Francoise Verley (Bernard's real wife?), as. Helene, is appropriately impersonally academic and cold at moments, in contrast to the flirting secretaries in her husband's office. Rohmer's magic touches abound throughout the film: Frederic as turtle; the calendar on the office wall; the almost kiss. Little roles create a real and fascinating Paris: the crazy salesgirl, the English Marilyn Monroe governess, the woman who wants "this little number" in a size 44.. Chloe is probably the simplest and most classic in tone of all the contes moraux, and unlike some others, does not flaunt its highly intellectual basis. A pair of reflecting moments are indicative of the excellent screenplay and direction by Rohmer: Helene is hesitant to kiss Frederic after her shower because he might get wet; Chloe, still dripping, says, "You can kiss me.- Water doesn't stain." The two women in Frederic's life are perfectly juxtaposed and their characters underlined by these two moments-one at the start of the film, tl e other at the end. The first two moral tales were made for French television and have never been released in the U.S. (maybe someday with luck). The others-"La Collectionneuse," "Ma Nuit Chez Maud," and "Le Genou de Claire "-have all been critically praised and surprisingly well received by the American public. Now, with this filmed hexagon completed, Rohmer fans will be eagerly awaiting his next project. I will always remember his "L'amour L'apres-midi" because I fell in love with Chloe, and because I think I smiled through the whole movie. I thank him for that. " . . a brilliant performer . .
