Waters is pleased
with Buke's effort
by Carl Neal
Assistant Sports Editor
"It's the best we've looked in a long time," coach Bucky Waters said after watching
his team lose to Carolina in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
No Duke team had failed to defend their home court from the Tar Heels since
1967, but Waters saw hope in the way his team lost the game.
"Of course I'd feel better if we won," Waters said. "We've worked so hard it's
frustrating. Somewhere there has to be a reward. Maybe ours will come next week."
Waters felt that the second half of the game was quality basketball but in the first
half the story was totally a replay of the Blue Devil's prior three games. In the previous
three games Waters' team averaged 35 per cent in field goal shooting. That was the
main reason for the 20 plus margin in the games.
"It's our first losing record in a long time but it's not been the most frustrating
year," Waters said. "The year we went 20-10 (1970-71) was the most frustrating.
There are things in coaching that don't show up in the won-loss records."
But the regular season is over and all minds turn to the tournament. "We've got
three days of basketball 120 minutes to atone for three months," Waters said.
'The tournament is a great opportunity for every team in the ACC.
"A win here would've helped us in the tourney. But we could still win it. Any team
could win it including Wake Forest. So much of it is luck."
Waters thought his team had played better than the last meeting with Carolina even
though they came out on the short end. "In the last meeting they killed us on the
boards," Waters said. "We held our own this time. We cut turnovers down in the
second half as well as shooting better.
"Elston and O'Donnell killed us," Waters said. "O'Donnell just seems to have great
games against us. But we had a good game from Melchionni, Fleischer and Kramer. It
just wasn't enough."
Elston was responsible for 16 points in the contest, several in the crucial moments
at the end of the game. O'Donnell also scored 16 points. O'Donnell's percentage was
88 per cent from the floor. -
A host of individual second places
thrust the UNC swimmers into the
runner's up slot for the team
championship in the ACC Swimming and
Diving Championships at the University
of Virginia in Charlottesville this past
week-end.
N.C. State dominated the competition
as the Wolfpack won all 1 8 events to grab
the team title. But the Tar Heels' depth
and sparkling performances by Dave
Marlin, Jike Southard, Jim Osborn and
co-captain Gerry Chapman carried UNC
into the second spot over the University
of Maryland. .
State overpowered the conference
with 658 points, followed by Carolina
with 395 and Maryland with 373. Wake
Forest, Virginia, Duke and Clemson
occupied the final four spaces.
The Tar Heels erased four UNC school
records at Charlottesville. Osborn
chopped half a second off Dave Marlin's
standard in the 200 individual medley,
going 2:00.3. Chapman lowered two
distance freestyle records, and Osborn
combined with Pete Butler, Bob Nagle
and Southard to set a new record of
7:08.7 in the 800 freestyle relay.
Four Carolina performances qualified
for the NCAA Championships at
Knoxville later this month. With 51.8 in
the 100 butterfly and 1:56.1 in the 200
butterfly, Osborn bettered those
standards. Chapman's 16:33 in the 1650
freestyle made the cutoff time, as did the
800 freestyle relay.
Osborn was the top scorer for the
Heels as he took second in both the 100 .
and 200 yard butterflys and fourth in
200 yard individual medley. Defending
champion in both flys, Osborn lost the
two crowns to Jim Schliestett by a
heart-breaking total of four-tenths of a
second.
Marlin also pulled in a pair of second
places, finishing runner-up in both the
100 and 200 yard backstrokes. After

qualifying first in the preliminaries of the
200 back, Marlin lost the final by only a
stroke, 1:58.6 to 2:00.3.
Carolina's tremendous depth in the
distance freestyles showed through as the
Heels took five of the top eleven spots in
the 500 freestyle and four of the top
eight places in the 1650. .Southard
finished second in the 500 to lead the
UN'C pack, followed in sixth by
Chapman, ninth by Pete Anderson, tenth
by Bobby Nagle and eleventh by Butler.
In the 1650, Chapman sparkled with
two school records in one race, turning
the first 1000 in 9:57 to drop Southard's
old mark of 9:58.1, and then finishing
the 1650 in 16:33 to break his own
record of 16:53.
Divers Larry May and Ben Aycock
saved their finest scores of the season for
when they were most sorely needed.
Showing poise and confidence under
pressure, May took one sixth and one
seventh place, while Aycock chipped in
an eighth and a ninth.
Three swimmers who helped inspire
Carolina were Butler. Bruce Miller and
Karl Thiele. Butler made huge drops in
the 200 freestyle and 1650 to 1:47.6 and
1 7:08.6, taking seventh and sixth in those
events. Miller and Thiele helped hold off
the Terrapins by placing high in the 400
individual medley, where with Southard
and Chapman they grabbed four of the
top eight places.
Thiele was also part of the UNC
breastroke corps that showed superb
depth in the meet. The other breastroke n
who placed were Bill Koczyk. a finalist in
two events. Mike Eddy and Tom Berry.
Carolina travels to West Point for the
Eastern Championships this week-end in
what will be the biggest team effort for
the squad this year.
"Second place in the ACCs was
something we had to have, Earey said.
'H3d we lost to Maryland, it would hjve
taken its toll on us. but now I'm
confident we'll be skyhigh for the
Eastern's. What we do at West Point will
be icing on the cake-this is the fun part
of our season and everyone is prepared to
swim their fastest."
