t Ma njuana useful drug expert says . United Press international WASHINGTON A drug expert said Wednesday marijuana is good medicine for many ailments and doctors should be free to prescribe it. At a federal hearing on marijuana laus. Dr. Joel Fort testified the drug had been used by physicians since 5000 B XT. and had proven helpful in treating glaucoma, cancer, asthma, alcoholism and even drug addiction. "1 think it is vital and essential for medical practice, that a tremendous amount of unnecessary suffering has the potential for being relieved by the availability of this substance and we should do everything possible to make it legally available." Fort said. . Fort, a world-renowned drug researcher and author, testified at a Drug Enforcement Administration hearing into federal legal controls on marijuana. He spoke on behalf of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) which is challenging the current federal classification of marijuana. It is now lumped together with such narcotics as heroin and LSD in a category of drug considered to have no medical value and h'igh abuse potential. Federal law makes marijuana possession a misdemeanor punishable for first offenders by up to 1 year in prison and a 55,000 fine. Government attorney Robert Rosthal accused Fort of making broad statements and said his testimony was irrelevant to the issue of reclassifying the drug. He said the DEA would base its decision on whether to reclassify marijuana on such considerations as international drug treaty obligations. ,S3 1 in your FREE ready now.
