News briefs
World Food Day activities today
Two Chapel Hill groups participating in World Food Day
today are planning activities to draw attention to the problems
ol world hunger. The food day is sponsored nationwide by the
Center for Science in the Public Interest, based in
Washington, D.C.
The UNC Starvathon Committee is encouraging students
to fast and contribute money they would have spent on food to
a special fund to help feed the starving.
Contributions can be turned in to the UNC YM-YWCA.
The money raised by the committee will be added to over
$5400 already collected by the group.
Thirty per cent of the money raised will be distributed to the
hungry in North Carolina through Church Women United.
The other 70 per cent will go to UN1CEF for distribution in
Bangladesh.
The Starvathon Committee also has invited interested
students to attend an organizational meeting of a Hunger
Action Committee at noon on Wednesday, April 23, in the
YMCA building.
Hunger and its implications on the human family will be the
topic of a program sponsored by the Newman Foundation's
Campus Calendar
Committee on World Hunger scheduled for 7:30 tonight
Newman wins RHA seat
Laura Newman, a sophomore from Charlotte, won the last
undecided seat on the Residence Hall Assciation in an election
held yesterday.
By a 108-70 margin, Newman, a Parker resident, deleated
Stuart Kaleel of Avery in the Scott Residence College race.
Lee elected MBA president
Peggy Daniels Lee recently was elected president of the
Master of Business Administration (MBA) Student
Association, an organization for first- and second-year MBA
students.
Lee is a fellow of the consortium for graduate study in
business management.
Other elected officers are John William Oliver, vice
president; Nancy Mcintosh Murray, administrative vice
president and Robert Everett Bosworth, financial vice-president.

This weekend, students and Chapel Hill
residents will get a chance to shear sheep, fly
kites, enter a bicycle road race, practice face
painting and indulge in the art of chalk
drawing on Franklin Street.
These are a few of the activities
highlighting this year's Apple Chill Fair,
sponsored by the Chapel Hill Recreation
Department. The Fair will begin with a kite
flying contest from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in
Kenan Stadium.
The contest is co-sponsored by the UNC
Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the People
tor the Protection of Jockey's Ridge.
Prizes will be awarded for the largest and
smallest, most original, most practical, and
highest-flying kite.

lootball star Chris Kupec, local
conservationist Carolista Baum and Wayne
Pond, WCHL announcer, will be judges.
Those who do not bring kites may
purchase them at the stadium for 50 cents
with proceeds going to the Save Our Sand
Dunes Fund.
From 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Franklin Street
will be closed to traffic between Henderson
and Columbia Streets for the Apple Chill
Fair activities.
In addition to sheep shearing and face
painting, Sunday afternoon's festivities will
include displays by local artists and
craftsmen, volleyball and other games,
puppet and magic shows and a bake sale.
A bicycle road race will start at 1:30 p.m.
Sunday at the corner of Franklin Street and
Airport Road.
