Nine members of the UNC fencing teams
took part in the southeast sectionals of the
Amateur Fencers League of America
(AFLA) May 23-26 in Tallahassee, Fla. It
was not a team tournament, but Coach Ron
Miller was pleased by the performances
turned in by several UNC team members.
UNC assistant coach Dave Lynn, took top
honors in the epee competition and will go to
Los Angeles for the AFLA nationals. Lynn
was the first ever UNC All-American in
fencing. Kevin Gallagher reached the epee
finals before being eliminated.
Travis Hanes, who took sixth place in the
epee, captured second in sabre, while Dan
Strait battled his way into the sabre
semifinals before losing.
In the foil competition, Dave Lynn took
fourth place, and Travis Hanes made it to the
semis.
In the women's bouts, UNC's Alison
Barrett placed third in the senior foil, and
Jody McKee reached the semifinals.
Kathi Kronenfeld. who placed fourth in
the senior division, took top honors in the
under-1 9 foil battles.
UNCs men's team, which has been ACC
champs since the conference first adopted
the sport in 1970. lost only one meet this past
year to national champs Wayne State.
Coach Miller feels the squad will be strong
again next year. "We graduated five seniors,
but we'll have enough to fill in adequately."
he predicted.
The women's team, which had a 7-2 record
this past year, and was ranked eighth
nationally, also figures to be. tough. Miller
was especially optimistic after the fine
performances of "our younger girls" at
Tallahassee. Both Kathi Kronenfeld and
Jody McKee are first-year participants.
