Netherlands Antilles to a basketball grant-in-aid Tar Heel Coach Dean Smith announced Saturday. WieL, a 6-3, 195-pound forward recently contacted Smith about the possibility of playing basketball at Carolina. UNC Assistant Coach Bill Guthridge traveled to Curacao to see him play and was impressed with his potential. Wiel is an outstanding athlete and a former Olympic sprinter but his basketball experience is limited. "We are delighted to have this outstanding young man choose our university to further his education." said Smith. "We think it .will be an interesting experience for our players to be associated with someone from the Dutch culture.' With the addition of Wiel, Carolina has signed four recruits to grant-in-aids. The Tar Heels earlier signed 6-0 guard Keith Valentine of Richmond, Va.; 6-5 forward-guard Loren Lutz of Alamosa, Colo.; and 6-5 swingman Dudley Bradley of Edgewood, Md. Ten athletes from the University of North Carolina will travel to Mexico City for the 10 Annual Wilfrido Massieu track meet June 27-29 UNC Coach Joe Hilton announced last week. The Tar Heels will join Lamar, Long Beach State in the outdoor event. Also competing are the Cuban national team and Mexico's Institute Politecnico. Representing Carolina will be long jumper Sam Beasley, pole vaulter Dave Robinson, discus thrower Gil Vance, javelin thrower Jeff Gorski, hurdler Mike Voight, distance runner Dave Hamilton, milers Ralph King and Henry Jones, and sprinter Reggie Brown. The invitation came as a result of UNC Athletic Director Homer Rice's contacts with the Instituto Politecnico about the junior varsity football games against the White Eagles. Carolina traveled to Mexico last fall. Dennis Huntley, the North Carolina state high school champion in the 880 and the mile, has signed a track grant-in-aid with the University of North Carolina, Tar Heel track coack Joe Hilton announced last week. Huntley, a senior at Bowman High Schoool in Wadesboro. won the 880 at the state championships two weeks ago with a time of 1:54.9. He then took the mile title in 4:15.5. "We're delighted that Dennis has decided to attend Carolina, said Hilton. "He is without a doubt one of the best middle-distance runners to come along in the state in a long time. "He has good speed and is a hard worker. He could develop into a first class performer in either the 880, the mile or the longer distances." In addition to sweeping the state championships in the 880 and the mile, Huntley also won both of those races in the sectional and district competition. "We feel they are capable of making major contributions to our baseball program." Steve Breece, the Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling champion at 118 pounds, has been awarded the first Jim Crockett Memorial Scholarship at the University of North Carolina. Breece, a rising junior from Tulsa, Okla., posted a 10-3 individual record for Coach Bill Lam's Tar Heels last season. Breec wrestled at the 126 pound spot most of the year. The scholarship is given in memory of James Allen Crockett, who died last year in Charlotte after becoming recognized as the most versatile promoter in the South.
