The music department, located in Hill Hall, offers a variety of outlets for creative frustration. Aside from regular course work and private and class lessons, the music department, with help from the Carolina Union, offers a multitude of ensemble organizations. The ensembles, which number around 20, cover group musical expression for almost any taste. Variety ranges from the marching and pep bands, sponsored by the Union, to opera theatre and the Jazz Lab Band. To participate in any of these ensembles an appointment must be made with the instructor in charge of the ensemble for an audition. Audition times have not yet been announced. Interested individuals should call Hill Hall sometime during registration for more information. An added plus to ensemble involvement is one hour credit per semester for each ensemble for undergraduates. The Jazz Lab Band, which rehearses Mondays 5-6 p.m., and Wednesdays 7:30-9 p.m., is under the direction of John Harding, Room 1 10 in the music Studs5 Diamond Studs, the musical version of the life of Jesse James, has returned to Chapel Hill for three weeks of performances at the Ranch House. The show, written and performed by local talent, premiered last October at the Ranch House, then moved to the Chelsea Theatre in New York where it had a long and successful run. The show has not changed a great deal since its premiere in Chapel Hill, according to director John Haber. Performances will be at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and 8 p.m. and 1 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
