Thursday, September 25, 1375 Ths D:Hy Tsr Hstl 5 ': 1 AII-ACC candidate Rod quarterback Larry Dick. Broadway tries by Grant Vosburgh Staff Writer ATTENTION FOOTBALL FANATICS: SOUTH CAROLINA IS BACK IN THE ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE . . . Well, they are this year as far as Virginia is concerned. Because of a scheduling problem, Virginia is unable to play Clemson and N.C. State this fall. An ACC rule says a team's eligibility for the conference championship depends on playing at least Five games in the league. ACC officials selected the USC game to complete the Cavaliers' requirement. Along with Virginia, which plays only four conference foes, State, Clemson, Duke and Maryland play only five, leaving Wake Forest and UNC as the only schools with a full ACC schedule this season. ACC publicity head, Marvin Francis, said Heels spike W-S State Carolina's opening volleyball match of the season here Tuesday resulted in two surprisingly easy victories. The Heels romped over Winston-Salem State and won by default over St. Augustine. In only 20 minutes UNC disposed of the W-S State Rams, winning the first game 1 5-2 and blanking them in the second, 15-0. Usurped by Carolina's shot-making and teamwork, W-S was no match for Head Coach Beth Miller's team. "H e definitely wanted to start the season v.uh a win, but 1 wish we had played better competition," said Miller. "Overall, I was very happy with the way we played and with the effort the girls gave." After the Heels defeated W-S State, the Rams were scheduled to face St. Augustine, but the Raleigh school did not show. UNC's starting team, Annmarie Wagstaff, Jane Foley, Donna Gutterman, Mary Alice Abdalla, Ruth Heruska and Patti Michaels, defeated the Rams in the match's first game. The Rams were shut out in the second game by Cathy Moore, Mary Alice Abdalla, Vickie Alden, Lynn Myers, Priscilla Davis and Bonnie Little. "Scheduling is a long-term thing, sometimes 10 to 12 years in advance," he said. "But, it doesn't pose any real problem to us in determining the conference champion. It (the final standing) goes on a percentage basis. If Virginia goes say, 4-1, and maybe Wake goes 4-2, Virginia will finish ahead." "The situation is just a quirk in the scheduling," UNC Athletic Director Homer Rice said. "Perhaps a contract wasn't made for the (conference) game and a conflict arose. The game would be dropped." Rice said though UNC doesn't play Maryland next year, the '77 season ruling making it mandatory for each conference team to play all six opponents may have been passed. Though N.C. State Coach Lou Holtz said Wake and Carolina were at an advantage by second contributed to the wins. Today the Tar Heels face N.C. State in a scrimmage here at 4 p.m. Carolina returns to regular season play Tuesday against Duke in Durham. $ 6 1 :3 KX i i . I j . "t , ii S A f i l m AGO All your favorite Beach Boys, Beatles... Q fjfajj A Carolina OOOOOO OOO OOOOO OOOO O OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO battles roa by Chip Enssiin Staff Writer The Tar Heels may be down after Maryland thrashed them 34-7 Saturday, but according to defensive tackle Rod Broadway, they are far from being out. "This team is real young," says "Broad," a 6-3,250-pounder from Oakboro, N.C. "It may take a few games but we'll do all right after everyone comes around." Broadway, a pre-season all-Atlantic Coast Conference ( ACQ pick, has had a slow start this season. Since the beginning of practice, he has been hampered by injuries, which sidelined him for the opener against William and Mary two weeks ago. "This is more injuries than I've had in my whole life," he says, referring to a thigh muscle pulled this summer, a shoulder injured the second day of practice, and a sprained ankle. "Now, I'm ready to get back in the swing of things," he says. "I'm not in tip-top playing shape right now, but I should be after a couple more games." Broadway, a junior, was particularly disappointed to lose to Maryland because it was his third straight loss to the Terps. The two teams will not meet next season. "We wanted to beat them. We all wanted playing all conference teams, Rice said he isn't so sure. "It really depends how you look at it," Rice said. "If Virginia's extra game was say, against Navy, then they would have definitely been at a disadvantage. (The Cavs lost 42-14.) But if they go 5-0 and somebody else goes 5-1, then they have the advantage." Netters play Carolina tennis fans get a chance to see the 1975-76 UNC women's tennis team today in the Blue-White intrasquad match at 3 p.m. on the courts behind Joyner dorm.. The competition promises some of the best individual matches of the year, as Coach Frances Hogan has tried to divide evenly the dozen members of her talent-laden varsity squad. Senior Jany Preyer will not play because of an injured wrist. The blue team will be led by sophomore Carney Timberlake, top UNC player on last fall and the only one on scholarship. Behind Timberlake on the second court will be freshman Susie Black of Greensboro, the top ranking junior in North Carolina. But you could tell, we didn't play in the second half like we should have. We just made more mistakes." He was also dissatisfied with his personal performance. "I'm not discouraged; I just had a bad game. It's as simple as that. But you can't keep thinking about Saturday the next Thursday. I've got to forget about it and do better next time." Broadway will have plenty of opportunities as the Heels face Ohio State, Virginia, Notre Dame and N.C. State in their next four games. "We're going to be pretty busy the next few weeks," he says. "Everybody's looking forward to it I know I am. We're not scared. We're not going to play dead." The UNC team has been watching films of Ohio State, and Broadway has been impressed with quarterback Cornelius Greene as well as super runner-blocker Archie Griffin, last year's Heisman Trophy winner. The potent Ohio State backfield will be a real test for some of the young, inexperienced players on defense. But Broadway has confidence in them. "A lot of these guys didn't play last year, but they're doing a real good job. I think we'll have a real good defensive team this year. We're going to get it together, no question about it. It's just when." Despite the tough schedule ahead, B roadway has high hopes for the season. The Tar Heels have gone to four bowl games in the past five years and they have a chance this year. "We'll go," says Broadway. "If not this year, then next year." He knows Ohio State and Notre Dame would like to make sure it's next year. blue-white and sophomores Linda Matthews and Lynn Brady. The whites will counter with sophomore Suzanne Bowron on the first court in what could be the season's best match. Bowron, the top women's player in Alabama, has played excellently in practice. The whites will have juniors Nina Cloaninger and Rebecca Garcia, freshman Lisa Dodson, senior Bitsy Leach and freshman Mary Kay McCormick on the other five courts. FOR SALE TIRED OF WALKING?
