6 The Daily Tar Heel Wednesday, October 22, 1975 intrarnurals ... i . l eague, by Brad Bauler Staff Writer Upsets characterized the intramural picture this week zs the heavies in tag football were eliminated from the playoffs by two unheralded teams. Reigning champion Teague dorm lost its crown in a low-scoring battle with Granville AW 69ers Thursday and the previously unbeatable Zeroes were defeated Monday night by the women's team from Connor. Defense was the strategy for both victorious squads. In the women's competition the Connor team stopped the offense of the Zeroes. The Zeroes had compiled an amazing record by outscoring opponents 243-0, until it encountered the Connor Coeds. Connor came away with a Hockey team ties ECU 3-3 GREENVILLE Bashi Buba's score with 20 seconds remaining gave the UNC women's field hockey team a 3-3 tie with East Carolina here Tuesday. ECU led at halftime 2-0 on goals scored by Jane Gallop and Gail Betton. Six minutes into the second half, Laurie Ginter scored for UNC to make it 2-1. But 30 seconds later, ECU was once again at the UNC goal, making the score 3-1. Buba scored for Carolina 61: minutes later and then scored again for the Heels with 20 seconds remaining to tie the game. Carolina's two regular fullbacks could not make the trip yesterday. Laura Brown and Lucy Sherman were replaced by Sally LaMotte and Susan Stearn at fullback. This was the first game that goalie Patti Williams had played with LaMotte and Stearn at the fullback position. q Wednesday & Thursday Nights f V "Something for Everyone" 1&J4B M S MfrjawJi !3 & Franklin St. It's Crossword Puzzler ACROSS DOWN 1 Remunerated 5 Moist 9 Walk aim lessly 11 Ceremony 13 Symbol for gold 14 Baffling 16 Symbol for tellurium 17 Resort 19 Choice part 20 Music: as written 21 Saucy 23 Before 24 Walk 25 Ascends 27 Oeep sleep 29 Sink In middle 30 Equality 31 Funeral song 33 Title of respect 35 Writes 36 Born 33 Protective shield 40 Fall behind 41 Snake 43 Guido'shlgh note 44 Man's nickname 45 One who goes swiftly 47 Chinese distance measure 43 Shouted 50 Declared 52 Beams 53 Heavenly body 1 Very poor person 2 3 4 Article Cyprinoid fish Erase (printing) Plunge Devoured 5 6 7 8 Greek letter Idle chatter Insect 9 10 Reigns 11 Ceremonies 12 Jump 15 Title of respect 18 Getting up 20 Place for safekeeping Former 22 Russian rulers 24 Shovel 26 Urge on I i SS $2.39 Across From restaurants I Granville Towers 929-2115 Zeroes fa shutout and a berth in the finals tonight against the Parker Pomonas at 5 p.m. The Connor team (6-1), has come a long way since the opening game of the season. It won its first two games but lost to the Phi M u sorority. The team decided it needed some guidance and appealed to Don Boyd and Dave Garabedian to coach them to victory. The result has been four straight shutout victories, three coming in playoff competition. Sandy Bennett, quarterback of the Coeds, runs the option plays for the team. She and Debbie Carpenter pose a deep passing threat. Cooke scored the only touchdown in the 6-0 victory over the Zeroes. The team will face the only undefeated team in women's tag football in the finals. The Parker Pomonas (7-0) run a wide open offense much like the Zeroes, but play an intense defensive game. Teague's offense was also choked off in a 9-6 defeat by the Granville AW 69ers. The decisive play in the game was a 35-yard field goal by Ed Hickman that put Granville ahead after an intercepted pass by Mike Harkey proved to be the only touchdown by the Granville gridders. After Granville upset Teague, it went on to win the semi-finals over the Winston Warlords 35-0. IM manager "R.V. Hight led his team to a perfect 8-0 record and looks for the defense to lead the team to the residence hall crown. "We have been defense-oriented all year, as shown in our victory over Winston. We scored on defense early and iced the game in the first half," he said. Only two teams have been able to score against the 69ers in eight games this season. Two Granville Towers teams will clash in the finals tonight at 6 p.m. Granville CW Blue reached the playoffs undefeated. The high-scoring team relies on short passing razzle-dazzle techniques. 9:30 p.m. -1 :30 a.m f i d nY c I Li ' Shonev's Annual Seafood Festival. Featuring seafood dinners all month long! Strangely enough, however, there were some individuals spotted peddling their wares outside the heavily patrolled gates. They were selling tickets to the game. Since that time, the campus has sounded like a recording from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" with people asking the same question "Who are those guys?" Discussion with members of the UNC Athletic Department reveals that they are among those asking the question. "1 was wondering myself who that fellow in the picture was," Athletic Director Homer Rice said in reference to a photo of one of the 'salesmen' in last week s DTH. "We've never had any real problem with scalping at Carolina. 1 can't understand how he got those tickets." "Sometimes we sell in blocks, like to alumni groups in one town," said Ms. Jean Keller, ticket office head. "If a member of one grbup is unable to attend the game, maybe another member of that group would sell his ticket." Joe Hilton, who is in charge of gate operations at each home game, agreed that this could be the case. Perhaps, he said, someone bought up a block of tickets with the intent to scalp them at the sell out game. Unfortunately for these persons, the Athletic Department anticipated this and publicly announced the game as a sell-out early in the season, hoping to discourage people without a ticket from coming to the game. It causes an over abundance of crowding and that's how gate-storming (crowds crashing the gates) occurs. If somebody intended to scalp a ticket aJL the Notre Dame game, he was disappointed, because few people without tickets showed up." On the contrary, reports from students indicate that some individuals were seen outside the gate selling tickets for half price. Assistant Athletic Director William Cobey commented on this. "If not, the only thing I can figure is that they got them at a low price from a member of an alumni group who came to the game with a few extra tickets. Then they sold it to someone else. If they bought it say, for two dollars from the alumnus (who would be losing no money since the ticket belonged to a no-show), then sold it for five or six, they could make a little profit." Hilton said that if you consider that Kenan Stadium had 50,000 spectators for the Notre Dame game, then by Cobey's process, it would be possible for someone to accumulate a handful of tickets with seats varying from endzone to Ram's Head, as reports had suggested. "But what some people don't understand is that although selling a ticket for less than cost is not scalping, it is still a violation of University rules. A salesman cannot come on this campus to solicite any kind of commodity. You may not think of football tickets as merchandise, but that's what they are."
