V i - x 5 it Wake Forest quarterback Jerry McManus baiuraay. - 4 J , Zeglinski zigzags past Carolina Blue by Jim Thomas Assistant Sports Editor Following Carolina's embarrassing 21-9 loss to Wake Forest Saturday one die-hard fan tried to console himself as he trudged out of Kenan Stadium. Turning to his companion, he said, "Did you hear about Zeglinski's 'Polish Army"? They sat over in Wallace Wade Stadium (Duke's stadium) for an hour before they finally figured out the game was over here." The joke brought a smile from his friend's face but both realized it was a weak effort. Wake Forest football jokes and Polish jokes are now things of the past, especially where John Zeglinski is concerned. Zeglinski was a one-man show Saturday as his 'Polish Army' had plenty to cheer about once they arrived. The Deacon halfback scored three touchdowns and piled up almost 200 yards in kickoff returns, rushing, punt runbacks and pass receptions. Two of his touchdowns came on passes from quarterback Jerry McManus. The first was a four-yard reception in the first quarter, concluding an opening 87-yard drive in 12 Sports briefs Soccer team The L'NC soccer team will host Maryland today at 3 p.m. on Fetzer Field. Zeglinski's third touchdown was a 45-yard punt return after UNCs Roc Brauman seemed to have him stopped for a loss. But Zeglinski kept his balance and streaked down the left sideline to break a 7-7 tie. "I used his momentum to spin him around," Zeglinski said afterwards, "and luckily he fell off. Once 1 reached the wall of blockers the rest was easy." While Zeglinski's performance sparked the Deacons, both coaches were quick to praise the play of McManus. "I think McManus had his best game of the season," said Wake Forest Coach Chuck Mills. McManus, a transfer from Lees McRae, completed nine of 1 1 passes for 1 16 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 30 yards and kept three Deacon drives alive by recovering three of his teammates' fumbles. His two touchdown passes boosted his season total to 10, making him the first Wake quarterback to accomplish that feat since Norm Snead in 1960. In the first half Wake opened with an 87 yard drive, notched by quarterback Jerry McM anus's four-yard pass to running back John Zeglinski. They, along with running back Clark Gaines, accounted for 204 of Wake's 347 yards on the ground. McManus also completed nine of 1 1 passes for an additional 1 16 yards. The Carolina defense kept Wake in its own territory for the rest of the first quarter, and Carolina put a tying 7-7 score on the Kenan Stadium board with a second quarter touchdown. The 92-yard push consumed over six minutes, as Voight went high stepping into the end zone from 1 5 yards out. The teams exchanged punts until halftime and each went into the locker room with nine first downs and 142 yards rushing. UNC Coach Bill Dooley said. "He probably held one of the hottest hands I've seen in a long while. "Overall, I'd have to say this was my best game," McManus concurred. "My passing percentage was working and the general play calling was good. But the line was really getting off the ball. We didn't pass any more than usual, we didn't bomb them to death." Perhaps, the most crucial pick-up came with the score tied 7-7 early in the third quarter with Wake facing a third and seven on its own six-yard line. McManus rolled right in his own endzone and threw to split end Bill Milner just before he went out of bounds for a 1 4-yard gain to the 20. ( v. M & A Early in the second half, the Deacons had first down and goal at the six-yard line. Bobby Gay, Bill Perdue, Duke Thompson and Ronnie Dowdy made key hits on Gaines and Frank Harsh, as the defense repelled Wake on fourth and inches from the goal. The ball went to UNC, but four plays later Johnny Elam's punt fell into the hands of Zeglinski, who circularly spun off a tackier at almost midfield, followed his blockers and scored on a run down the UNC sideline. That put Wake ahead 1 4-7, and deflated the UNC defense, which gave up another TD early in the fourth quarter for 21-7. Down a pair of touchdowns, the UNC offense still stayed with its ground attack in a critical fourth quarter drive that began with 1 0:39 left in the game. On third game and five at the Carolina 35, Voight picked up a first down but it was ruled no play because of a UNC holding penalty. That mistake was a fateful turning point. Instead of first and 10 and approaching midfield, the Heels faced third and 1 9 at the Carolina 21. A few minutes later. Carolina got the ball again with 5'2 minutes remaining, but fell short on a passing drive that went from its own 34 to the Wake one yard line, where Voight was then thrown for a four-yard loss. Carolina's two points on a safety came with about a minute left when Wake got a bad snap from center on a punt. Voight said the four-yard loss was because he didn't hear what audible Paschall had called, and that in the drive with the holding penalty, a passing attack should not have necessarily been used. "When you're lpsing, you've got to do what you do the best and stick it down their throats. "If you have a missed play, it means that you must try that much harder the next time around."
